Thanks for your time

It was close to ten am when Ohno opened his eyes; Sunday morning was as peaceful as it could be. He heard birds chirping and voices of small children from the nearest park. Kame was nowhere to be seen; he left a short message on the desk beside the bed, explaining that he left for Iwate.
Ohno slowly rose off of his bed and headed towards the bathroom, he had a strange dream last night involving Jun. They were in a flowerbed, holding each other without a single cloth on their bodies, it felt so real that he felt guilty towards Kame.
The chef had prepared breakfast for him, a plate of salad and a piece of cheese bread. Ohno poured himself a cup of coffee and enjoyed the salad while watching TV. The morning news was about a little storm which hit the northern part of Japan, he changed channels and stopped on a historical Japanese drama. None of them aroused his interest, but he kept the TV on and stared blankly on the screen.

It was the second week since Jun started working at Asterisk. Ohno avoided the man as much as he could and he still pretended that he doesn’t know him. Sho and Aiba asked him for help on how to court Jun but he simply had no answers to their questions. He finished his breakfast and managed to take a walk to the park. He put his remote-controlled helicopter in his tote bag and stepped outside of his apartment.

The air was cold and windy, but Ohno liked it. He sat down on a bench and started playing with the helicopter; its sound broke the silence, competing with the chirping birds on the trees. It didn’t last long before Ohno couldn’t control it anymore. The helicopter fell down freely, heading straight to the solid ground around ten meters away from him. He ran to the spot and was about to take it when somebody picked it up for him.

“Is this yours?”

Ohno lifted his head to see the owner of the voice - it was Ninomiya, Jun’s friend.

“Yes, but it was broken,” Ohno said and offered a smile to the other guy.

“I came here with my friend,” Ninomiya said without being asked, he gestured to a bench beyond the trees, “do you want to join us? Are you alone?” he asked, peeking toat where Ohno came from.

“I’m alone,” Ohno answered.

“Join us then, we brought too much food and I’m not a good eater,” Ninomiya grinned and for some reason, Ohno couldn’t resist him.

The man was still holding his helicopter as they walked towards the bench. Ohno knew that Ninomiya’s friend was Jun and he also knew how awkward it would be to meet him face to face. But he couldn’t avoid Jun forever; sooner or later they would eventually have to talk.

Jun was seating on a mat with two boxes of various cakes beside him.He was wearing a bright red parka above a beige T-shirt, his hair was light brown and he used a hairclip to hold his fringe. His white skin glowed under the weak sunshine. He looked so flawless, like a too-well-made wine which could make everybody drunk just by looking at it.

“J!” Ninomiya called him.

“Nino, what took you so lo…” Jun turned to them and his eyes widened in surprise. He was clearly speechless as he saw Ohno beside his friend. Both of them were staring at each other, the world suddenly fell into a deep silence. Ohno didn’t know how to greet the man before him and so did Jun. Instead, they let their eyes sink into each other until Nino finally broke the silence.
“Let’s take a seat, Ohno san,” he said, grabbing his wrist.

Ohno slumped down beside Ninomiya and gazed as far as he could from the beautiful creature beside him.

“Ohno san, what a coincidence,” Jun opened the conversation, his voice was a little bit shaken and nervousness was clearly shown in his gesture. “I’m sorry for your shirt,” he continued.

“It’s okay,” Ohno answered.

They seemed like strangers who only met by chance, but in reality, they were two people connected by a past –one that was too difficult to forget. Ohno tried not to think about his dream last night but it kept on appearing in his head, clearer than ever.

“Do you want to try the cookies?” Ninomiya said.

“Ah…yes, I tried to make them this morning,” Jun stammered.

“J got the recipe from Kamenashi’s cooking show, he’s his biggest fan,” Ninomiya chirped in.

Ohno’s blood ripped unpleasantly as he heard what Nino had said; so Jun watched Kame’s shows regularly and even copied his recipes. He wondered what kind of reaction would Jun has if he finds out that Kame was his fiancé. But Ohno wasn’t sure whether Jun still remembered what they had five years ago or if he had already forgotten about it. Besides, he had become the perfect man now, mesmerizing everyone he meets – including Aiba and Sho.

He extended his hand to take the cheese cake and ate it. Its taste was familiar since Kame often made it for him.

“Is it bad?” Jun asked.

“It’s yummy,” Ohno looked at Jun straight in the eye and smiled at him. He had assured himself that Jun didn’t know him and didn’t remember anything from five years ago.

“Thanks,” Jun replied. He fixed some of his hair that has fallen off his clip – it was just a simple movement, but Ohno found it intoxicating.

“I need to go to the toilet,” Nino murmured. He rose off the mat and limped forwards, both Ohno and Jun watched his movements.
An intense silence fell between them, Ohno even found it hard to breathe as he and Jun were left alone. The man beside him shifted closer, he looked at Ohno sharply, his eyes were like beacon lights which turned Ohno’s body warmer.

“Did you forget me?” Jun asked.

So he still remembered about us, Ohno thought. He didn’t answer immediately, he returned Jun’s gaze and let the light from Jun’s eyes bathe him even more.

“I thought you were the one who forgot about me,” Ohno said after a good 15 seconds of silence. He could’ve answered with more proper words, but that was all he could think about.

“Never a single second,” Jun said with a deep voice that Ohno liked so much. The voice had become deeper as Jun grew older.

“I’m going to get married with someone I love.”

Jun’s pupils grew larger as he heard that, but he managed to smile, “Who’s the lucky one?”

“I can’t talk about it with you.”

“Why not?”

“It’s too personal, we barely know each other,” Ohno gulped, he didn’t mean to say that, but those words just escaped his mouth. Jun looked offended, but he still smiled weakly.

“I want to get to know you better.”

“Matsumoto san…”

“You used to call me Jun.”

“It’s in the past, I belong to someone now.”

“What if I don’t care?” Jun showed a strong eagerness, but it was not right. No matter how much Ohno wanted the man – his heart belongs to Kame now. “Ohno san, I never gave up. I came this far just to find you. I’ve been craving to hold you for these five years.”

Ohno gulped, he didn’t expect this. The tiny part of his brain wanted to scream the same thing, but he couldn’t betray Kame.
“I’m going home,” Ohno rose off the mat, “thanks for the cookies.”

He stepped further, afraid that he would be caught off guard if he stayed any longer. He could feel Jun’s stare behind him. That man, what was he thinking?

Ninomiya appeared from behind the trees, he approached Ohno slowly. “Ohno san, are you leaving?”

“Yes,” Ohno firmly answered.

“What about your helicopter?”

“You can have it,” he said. Ninomiya gave him a suspicious gaze before thanking him politely.

He returned home and threw himself on his bed.He closed his eyes and almost immediately, Jun’s face appeared.

‘He’s even more beautiful than every angel in heaven’ all of a sudden, Sho’s words buzzed inside his head. He couldn’t agree more, Jun was just the most perfect creature this planet could have.

But he had Kame who loves him with all his heart; the chef was nearly as handsome as Jun, but in different categories. He searched for his phone and dialed Kame’s number.

“Ohno kun, did you eat your breakfast properly?” Kame picked his phone almost immediately.

“Kame chan, I missed you.”

Silence reigned for a couple of seconds.

“What is it? You rarely say that you’ve missed me.”

“Nothing, I just want to hold you right now,” Ohno continued. The only way to get over Jun was by holding Kame close in his arms.

“So sweet,” Kame chuckled. “I’ll be back home around nine pm, don’t fall asleep, promise?”

“Promise.”

“I have to go now, see you tonight.”

Ohno still had the phone on his ears even after Kame ended the call. He was scared that he wouldn’t be able to control his own feelings. He held the pillow closer, smelling Kame’s shampoo on it. But no matter what he did, Jun’s face refused to leave his thoughts.

“J, your wallet,” Nino handed Jun the wallet and watched him tighten his shoelace. “Sakurai san will repair the curtain today; do you have any special requests?”

“Tell him to change it into dark blue,” Jun said. He wore his jacket and checked his bag once again.

“J, I think Sakurai san likes you,” Nino said while inserting his finger into a hole on his pajama.

“He’s just trying to be polite.”

“No, I can see it in his eyes.”

“He’s wasting his time,” Jun answered, smiling at the shorter.

“You’re beautiful, J. Everyone will fall in love with you,” Nino’s voice sounded different than usual, he looked down on his abnormal leg and bit his lips.

“Nino, what’s wrong? Did someone bully you again?”

Nino shook his head.

“You’ll be late for work,” the man said.

Jun looked at the shorter in worry, “Tell me if there’s something wrong.”

“I’m fine,” Nino smiled. “Have a good day.”

Jun left the apartment in bewilderment. He had met Ohno yesterday and said that he doesn’t care if Ohno was getting married with someone else. That was a stupid statement, he knew he shouldn’t have said it, but he couldn’t stop himself. He had to let Ohno know that he still loved him, no matter how much time had passed.

“Good morning, Matsujun.”

Aiba greeted him cheerfully; as if a Monday morning was something to celebrate for instead of complaining about.

“Morning, Aiba san,” Jun firmly returned the greeting. He prepared his heart to meet Ohno again after what exchanged between them yesterday. He went to the janitor room to take his equipment out; it was located right beside a window, giving him a clear view of the school gates. A car stopped in front of the school gate; its door opened and he saw two men got down. One of them was Ohno and the other one – Kamenashi Kazuya.

Jun narrowed his eyes; the man beside Ohno was really Kamenashi. Ohno spoke to the man shortly and leaned closer to give the taller a kiss on his lips. The scene made Jun breathless, his heart clenched and a strange pain stabbed his chest all of sudden. Ohno and Kamenashi – how come? The chef he had been admiring was Ohno’s boyfriend?

Jun gripped the broom tightly in his hand and bit his lower lip in agony. He wasn’t expecting Ohno’s fiancé to be Kamenashi Kazuya. How could he win against the chef?

His Monday couldn’t be worse when he was assigned to clean the art room.He was forward enough yesterday to say that he would never give up on Ohno, but seeing him directly kissing somebody was a different thing.

Ohno was still busy with his calligraphy equipment when Jun entered the room. Papers were scattered on the floor along with ink and unused brushes. He had never cleaned the art room before this and had no idea that this room would be this messy. Ohno’s black hair covered half of his face as he stooped down to pick up his brush. Jun braced himself as he started to swing his broom.
He didn’t hear Ohno’s steps as he shifted closer to him and grabbed his hand out of the blue.

“Let me help,” he said.

“Ohno san, it’s okay.”
But Ohno had already moved around to collect the scattered papers and placed them into the dustbin.

“My class isn’t always this messy, today is a little bit different,” the man shook his head and continued to collect the papers.
“Would you like to accompany me tonight?”

Jun made sure that he didn’t hear it wrong before answering, “Accompany you?”

“Yes,” Ohno nodded. “I want to buy Ninomiyakun a pair of sneakers.”

“Nino? Why?”

“I just want to give him a present, is that wrong?”

“No,” Jun shook his head, “but you both don’t know each other that well.”

“Is that a problem?”

“No,” again, Jun shook his head. He felt like a fool now. He remembered Ohno also gave him random presents every time he visited the geisha house five years ago.

“So, can you accompany me?”

Jun knew it would be better if he reject the invitation. He could make excuses politely but all he did was nod and said he would be waiting at the school gate.
***
They walked side by side on the sidewalk. Ohno reminded himself that he would be in big trouble if Kame found out about this, but he just couldn’t resist what his heart told him. Jun was a little bit awkward at first but he relaxed and began talking randomly. They stayed away from topics that could remind them of what happened five years ago and talked about casual things like weather or movies.

“I can’t believe that you’re dating Kamenashi Kazuya,” Jun said.

“Surprise,” Ohno replied, sliding out the cigarette pack from his pocket, he took one and lit it. “Do you smoke?”

Jun shook his head.

“How old are you now?”

“26,” Jun answered briefly.

Ohno blew the smoke from his nose and nodded to himself; Jun was at the same age as Kame but for some reasons, the man before him looked more matured. He didn’t know much about Jun’s personality since they didn’t really have any heart to heart talks back then. They just simply had fun. He knew nothing about the beautiful man next to him.

“Are you serious about getting married?” Jun asked after a few minutes of silence.

“I guess so,” Ohno shrugged, throwing his cigarette butt into the nearest trash bin. He loved Kame for sure and there was no hesitation to make him his official partner. But he wanted Jun as well; the man was someone you couldn’t say no to.

“Aiba san is crazy about you,” Ohno said.

“I know, but I don’t feel the same,” Jun scowled, “I just can’t get over you, Ohno san.”

Ohno stopped and turned around to face the taller man, he leaned closer making Jun jerk away. “You’re such a rare beauty, Jun,” Ohno said with a low voice, “but you’re a little bit too late.”

Their eyes met. Ohno could see how the brown orbs widened and spread warmth into his heart. If only Jun came earlier, perhaps the story would be a little different.

“Can’t you just leave that Kamenashi for me?”

“I wish I could,” Ohno said, leaning closer. Their lips were just two inches from each other. Ohno couldn’t help himself from kissing those lips but Jun pulled away and shook his head.

“I’m not a geisha that you can pay anymore,” he said. “I’m going home. Good luck with your shoe hunting, Ohno san.”

Ohno was about to grab the man’s wrist but he was too late. His fist grabbed air as Jun slipped away and walked further without even looking back.

“Jun!”Ohno called. “I thought what we had back then was something real.”

Jun stopped and half turned to Ohno. He gave him a weak smile and continued walking away, leaving Ohno with a miserable feeling.

Ohno lit another cigarette stick. He was trying to justify what he had just done, but his mind was clouded by a thick fog and he couldn’t think straight. He bought a pair of Nike sneakers for Nino after asking the man’s feet size from Sho and had the shopkeeper deliver it to Nino’s apartment.

He went to a bar by himself and drank until his head couldn’t handle the liquor anymore. He reached home around eleven pm and saw Kame standing by the door, both hands on his waist.

“Where have you been?”

“Kame chan, why are you here? You’re supposed to go for a filming, right?”

“Rescheduled,” Kame irritatingly answered. “Where have you been? You didn’t answer my calls.”

“I was at the usual bar.”

Kame clicked his tongue, he watched Ohno enter the room with unstable steps and throw himself on the sofa. The chef rarely raised his tone; however Ohno couldn’t blame him for becoming angry, the other was just worried about him.

“Kame chan is angry,” Ohno extended his hand to reach Kame’s cheek but the other jerked away.

“I’m leaving,” he said.

He heard Kame grab his bag and slam the front door, but he had no energy left to chase after him. Maybe it would be better if he let Kame handle his feelings before talking to him again. He closed his eyes and fell asleep without changing his clothes.
