"Nino?"

It was in the middle of summer, the temperature reached 40 degrees outside, it was hard to breathe and people seemed to see mirage everywhere. Ohno wished for the last one when he saw a man who was walking towards him.

"Ohno kun," the other man approached him, his face reddened by the summer heat and he was all sweaty.

"Long time no see," Ohno said, trying to hide his surprise.

"Three years," Nino answered, wiping his sweat with the back of his hand. "How's life?"

"Well," Ohno shrugged, "nothing is really changing."

Nino spread his sight around and inhaled a deep breath, "It must be tough to live here" he commented.

"Not really, I get used to it already. What bring you to Tokyo?"

"I’m here to interview some famous guy, I work for a monthly magazine publisher," Nino smiled.

Ohno was taken aback, he never guessed that Nino would become a writer, he had a dream of becoming a baseball player and to realize it, he even joined the local baseball team when they were in high school. He played as an amateur athlete when he graduated, and three years later he came back as a writer for a magazine publisher – life could be full of surprise sometimes.

"Jun also works for the magazine publisher," Ohno mentioned.

"Jun?"

"Ah, you should meet him; we live together, he'll be glad to meet my old friend."

Old friend," Nino mumbled.

They were more than friends back then. Nino was Ohno's first - almost in everything. But nothing last forever, they broke up, Ohno moved to Tokyo for work, he found his new love and a whole new life here. Nino stayed behind in Hokkaido, worked in an old inn as a part-timer when Ohno left. They still contacted each other – as friends, but these past six months, Nino didn’t send Ohno any emails and today he appeared from nowhere, right in front of his office.

I’ve just finished my work for today,” Ohno said, adjusting his eyeglasses on the bridge of his nose. “Are you free?”

Nino nodded.

Come by to my house, Jun said that he cooked extra dinner, what a coincidence,” Ohno beamed.

Nino showed him a grin and followed his steps towards the station. It reminded him of their past, Nino always walked one step behind him and trailed him in silence. They often went to temples together, Ohno liked to tease the other when he prayed seriously, telling him that the Gods would grant all of his wishes by tomorrow morning.

Their first kiss was at the backyard of Ohno’s house, under the sun heat in summer. Nino fainted right away because he had fever back then and he was too hardheaded to stay on the bed. Both of them still laughed over that day a long time after it had passed.

Ohno wondered whether Nino still remembered it…

Do you like this city?” Nino asked.

I can’t say it precisely,” Ohno answered. “I missed Hokkaido, it’s been a long time since I came back. You were having a work trip when I went there, that’s what I heard from your sister.”

She told me that you visited,” Nino said, a weak smile crossed his face. “I missed your presence in that place; it’s never the same without you.”

Life goes on,” Ohno said.

They boarded the train and stood next to each other. Nino’s skin was as pale as Ohno could remember; he never got tanned, even in the hottest summer. His appearance was barely changed, he still wore a T-shirt which looked too big on him. The only thing that changed from him was his hairstyle. He did something to it, his thick black hair was curly now, and it fit him perfectly.

Jun opened the door with a broad smile on his lips as he saw Ohno. His eyes moved to Nino and he welcomed the man warmly.

We have met before,” Jun said cheerfully, “in a fashion show in Akita, if I’m not mistaken, you lent me your charger.”

Ah, yeah, I remembered,” Nino smiled at Jun, “we live in a small world,” he glanced at Ohno, as if telling him that he was happy that Ohno had found someone like Jun.

You came here for an interview?” Jun asked as he gestured them to the dining room.

Yes, it’s the only one chance to interview that Sakurai Sho,” he said as he sat down.

I envy you,” Jun commented while taking three cans of beer from the fridge.

Ohno listened to their conversation; he never guessed that Jun and Nino already knew each other. They talked casually like old friends, Nino glanced a few times at him, but Ohno couldn’t find any meaning behind his gazes. He didn’t know whether Nino already had someone special in his life or he simply couldn’t get over Ohno at the first place.

Nino never wanted the break-up; it was Ohno who initiated it. When he remembered Nino’s face on the day he ended their love relationship, he felt that he was the worst person on earth for leaving Nino behind – all alone with his miserable feeling.

Where do you stay?” Jun asked as they finished the dinner.

I haven’t decided,” Nino shrugged.

You can stay here, in our guest room,” Jun offered a look to Ohno, asking for approval.

Yes, Jun’s right, you’d better stay here,” Ohno said, avoiding Jun’s gaze and pretended to finish his beer, even though the can had already empty.

I can’t let Satoshi’s old friend wonder alone, looking for a place to stay, meanwhile we have a vacant room,” Jun winked at Nino and rose from his seat to show Nino the room. Ohno stayed at the dining table, not knowing whether he should be happy or not to witness that Jun got along with Nino that quick.

It was because Jun didn’t know about their past or it was because Ohno never being honest with his feeling. He had never mentioned Nino’s name in front of Jun; he was afraid that if he did it, he would recall all the memories he had with Nino. They were hard to forget, no matter how he tried.

He loved Jun with all his heart; but a human wasn’t a robot, he couldn’t just delete the things he had with Nino back then. He couldn’t lie to himself that he still had a feeling for Nino.

He said that he would take a shower,” Jun had returned to the table, he took a seat in front of Ohno and sipped his beer.

Are you okay, Satoshi?” Jun asked.

I’m okay,” Ohno answered shortly, “let me do the dishes.”

You don’t have to.”

You’re tired, let me do it,” Ohno collected the dishes and brought them to the sink and started washing them. He never imagined that the three of them would stay under the same roof; he hoped these three days would pass soon.

Jun slept almost immediately that night, but Ohno couldn’t close his eyes. His mind wandered everywhere, the fact Nino was sleeping at the room next door bothered him. He looked at Jun, his hand circled Ohno’s waist and his breaths tickled his neck. Jun’s favorite sleeping position was crouching in his arm, like a cat looking for warmth; he would sleep in no time in that state. He caressed Jun’s face with the back of his hand, he was as flawless as a baby, his brown hair covered his forehead, and his beautiful lips parted slightly, his long eyelashes fluttered with the rhythm of his breaths.

He freed himself off Jun’s hand and slowly rose from the bed, opened the door and went to the veranda, it was nearly midnight, but the city was as alive as in the daylight.

Ohno lit the cigarette and placed it between his lips; he blew the smoke to the air and watched it disappeared.

You’re still awake,” Nino’s voice was heard behind him.

You too,” Ohno smoked his cigarette while closing his eyes, enjoying the taste of it. Nino’s steps came closer to him; he enjoyed Ohno looking at the night scenery.

He’s a good guy,” Nino referred to Jun. “Did he know that I’m your old friend?” Nino stressed the last two words with a different tone.

I’m not sure of it,” Ohno answered honestly.

Nino turned his body and leaned his back on the fence; he heaved a deep sigh while staring at the night sky.

Can I have one?” he gestured to Ohno’s cigarette.

He slid it out from its box and handed it to Nino. He never knew that Nino was smoking; he told Ohno once that he would never touched any cigarette for the rest of his life.

They smoked in silence, the summer night was windless, but somehow Ohno felt a kind of breeze on his skin. Perhaps he was just imagining it.

Jun sent Ohno a message, telling him that he would be late that night, so he had no choice but to buy dinner box. Nino was reading a comic when Ohno found him in his apartment living room. Nino greeted him and asked him where Jun was.

He’ll be late,” Ohno said while opening the fridge to find some beer.

Nino put his comic aside and joined him on the dining table. He brought a magazine in his right hand and opened it on the table, “This is one of the articles I have written,” he showed Ohno the column where his name was written as the writer of the article. It was mainly about business or lifestyle, so Ohno rarely touched this kind of magazines. Jun also worked for the same theme and he often scolded him for his ignorance, sometimes, he even read the articles he wrote out loud for Ohno to listen.

Nino’s way of writing was different compared to Jun’s. He used unique words and there was a sense of humor in it, he looked straight to Nino’s eyes as he finished reading it.

This is interesting, you’re so good,” he praised the man whose face blushed slightly. “You could be a writer, I mean like a novel or something.”

I’m thinking about it too,” Nino said.

He returned to the living room, Ohno followed him. They talked about random things, except that they were ex-lovers. Both of them tried to avoid the topic and talked as if they never had those things, but they were only human beings, sometimes they lost control and forgot that they should behave like real old friends.

It was just a hidden desire which suddenly appear in his chest and no matter how hard Ohno tried to hold it, he couldn’t and he gave up to the situation. He knew that he would regret it tomorrow morning or perhaps an hour later when they had done.

Nino was below him; his eyes were half-closed, his hands squished him so tight. Ohno lowered his head to drown his lips to the waiting exposed neck; he heard a pleasure groan escaped Nino’s mouth as Ohno’s tongue touched his skin.

It was probably the biggest betrayal he had ever done to Jun. However, his body won’t listen to his senses, he sank deeper to the body before him and when they finished, Nino whispered something on his ear.

I’m going to get married next month.”

Ohno pulled him to his embrace and congratulated him, not mentioning that he felt a sharp needle had been stabbed to his chest.

Nino took his phone and showed him a picture of a handsome man.

His name is Masaki, we met a few months ago at a business meeting. He’s a good guy, you should meet him.”

Ohno looked at the picture, this Masaki guy seemed to have a sincere smile and he hoped that he would be a great partner for Nino.

Jun came back nearly midnight, he looked so tired, but he managed to smile at Ohno who waited for him at the living room. Jun told him about his annoying client who made him work this late

I’m sorry to keep you waiting; you should have gone to bed earlier.”

I can’t sleep,” he said, kissing Jun’s forehead. “I’ve prepared the bathtub for you.”

Thanks,” Jun disappeared towards the bathroom, leaving Ohno whose mind was still in chaos. He rose off the sofa and followed Jun.

Can I join you?”

Sure,” Jun bent his knees to give him some space. Ohno took off his clothes, cleaned himself under the shower before entering the bathtub.

It’s rare for you to take a bath at this hour…” Jun said, but Ohno didn’t answer, he leaned closer and kissed Jun’s lips. They were different from Nino’s, but Ohno couldn’t compare them. Jun and Nino had their own beauty; there was nothing he could compare.

Jun, would you marry me?”

Jun lifted his eyebrows, questioning. He laughed as he reached Ohno’s neck, pulled him closer and kissed him again.

Why would I say no?”

I’m just worried,” Ohno muttered.

Ohno slept soundly that night, Jun was holding him tightly; as if afraid that Ohno might be disappearing when he’s asleep.

***

Nino left for Hokkaido early in the morning two days later. Ohno couldn’t make it to the airport, so it was only Jun who accompanied the man.

Jun knew that Ohno still couldn’t get over Nino, even though Ohno never mentioned it. He found out about Nino from one of his friends who happened to work with the guy. Ohno and Nino lived in the same town, they were lovers and everybody had expected them to get married sooner or later, but Ohno chose the different path to work in Tokyo and left Nino behind.

Satoshi mentioned that you’re going to get married,” Jun said as they walked together towards the departure gate.

Yeah, will you come to my wedding?”

Sure,” Jun nodded. “Take care, don’t hesitate to call me when you’re in Tokyo,” he gave a brief hug to the shorter man and saw him disappeared through the crowds.

Jun felt a grip in his chest, if Ohno didn’t move to Tokyo, perhaps he and Nino had already married and lived happily in a small town in Hokkaido. He walked back home with a weird feeling.

Ohno sent him a message around noon, asking him for a date. He smiled; Ohno had chosen him in the end, even though he couldn’t force Ohno to completely forget Nino. They were neither robots nor computer; their brain couldn’t forget and delete the past that easily.

He typed something on his phone and clicked send button.

I’ll marry you tonight’
