Disclaimer : This story is just my imagination
Summary : Nino – of course – never showed him any sign that he was interested in Aiba, regardless how often they went hang out together, regardless how fun it was. Since the first time Aiba met Nino, he always felt the butterflies flew away from his stomach every time he imagined that handsome face.
Warning : Bad English
“Listen, I don’t like dramas,” Nino folded his arms in front of his chest, frowning.
“This one is different,” Aiba pushed the ticket to Nino’s hand, “promise,” he grinned.
“Why do I need to go to the cinema with you and watch the movie I don’t like?” Nino grimaced as he received the ticket from Aiba.
“Because I’m so lonely without you, Ninomi,” Aiba said, circling his hand to Nino’s shoulder and dragging him into the cinema.
Nino basically only grumbled at the beginning, but in the end, he would enjoy the movie more than Aiba did. It applied not only for movies, but also bowling, baseball, shopping and even enjoying sunrise at the beach on Sunday morning no matter how reluctant he was to wake up early.
They met a year ago on Jun’s birthday party. Jun was Aiba’s old friend who happened to be so good in gathering people. Aiba and Nino sat at the same table and he remembered how Nino told him to be quiet since his voice was bothering everyone. It was not the best way to get to know people, but somehow, Aiba liked Nino’s company, they exchanged numbers and met on a regular basis since then.
“I’m gonna cry,” Aiba whispered to Nino as the scene turned mellow.
Nino clicked his tongue, but he let Aiba hide his face on his shoulder.
“You’ll leave your snot there,” Nino hissed.
They walked side by side as they left the cinema, the night had turned colder and the soft wind hit their face. Aiba laid his hand on Nino’s shoulder with no words; he wanted to hold Nino’s hand, but it felt as hard as laying a hand on a wild tiger’s back (not mentioning that Aiba worked at the zoo). He got used to hearing Nino’s protest or his critics, but he couldn’t stand imagining Nino’s puzzling gaze if he dared to hold his hand.
Nino – of course – never showed him any sign that he was interested in Aiba, regardless how often they went hang out together, regardless how fun it was. Since the first time Aiba met Nino, he always felt the butterflies flew away from his stomach every time he imagined that handsome face. Nino was two years younger than him; he had a very nice figure with a puppy-like-smile which could melt every stone in this damn earth. Perhaps the thing which made Aiba like him the most was his straightforward statement, but somehow it scared him, he could hear Nino’s voice in his head if he told him that he wanted a date.
‘Aiba san, why do I need to say yes? We’re friends, right? What’s with that date, it makes me sick’
Nino yawned and said that he would have a big day tomorrow.
“I need a long sleep tonight,” he said, stretching his body.
“Me too. I have to bathe a lion tomorrow,” Aiba said as he smiled to the other.
“I haven’t visited the zoo; I’d like to go there this weekend, if it’s okay with you.”
“Sure,” Aiba beamed. He waited for Nino to say something else, but the other didn’t say anything. He inserted his hands to his jeans pockets, erasing the chance for Aiba to hold them.
“Nino!” he called as they separated at the station, “good night.”
Nino smiled and waved him good-bye.
***
“Are you dating?” Jun asked.
It had been so long since he and Jun met and had some drink. The guy dragged one of his acquaintances to drink with them, a cool man named Sho who introduced himself immediately as he saw Aiba.
“Me and Nino?” Aiba confirmed.
Jun nodded.
“No,” Aiba shook his head, “we’re just friends, there’s no way Nino would date someone like me.”
“You haven’t tried,” Jun murmured, “but it’s up to you. I’m not in the position to tell you on what to do.”
Aiba sipped the cocktail and kept quiet, Jun had known that he put a liking on Nino, was it too obvious? He looked forward to seeing Nino this weekend at the zoo; would it become the perfect time to confess?
***
Nino did come to the zoo, but he wasn’t alone. He approached Aiba while smiling broadly, his friend (or whoever he was) trailed behind him.
“Hi,” he greeted Aiba with a paralyzing smile. “Ohno kun wants to take the photos, is it okay?” he gestured to the guy beside him.
“As long as it doesn’t scare the animals,” Aiba answered, glancing at Ohno.
He stole glances every now and then at both of them, feeling the bitter sensation on his throat as he saw their closeness. He hated to see how bright Nino’s smile was when he checked Ohno’s photos or when Ohno took his pictures.
He left them towards the office, Nino got his company and he didn’t need Aiba anyway. He wiped the sweat on his face and took a seat while drinking some water. He didn’t come back to the lion’s cage; he didn’t even say good-bye to Nino when he and Ohno left the zoo. He was angry at himself for what he had done. He saw Nino’s name on his phone screen as he called, but Aiba ignored it. Nino gave up after the third call, but he still left a short message.
‘Are you busy? Can I call you when you’re home?’
Aiba erased the message immediately, feeling the weird anger still lingered his head. Nino must have been very confused and puzzled for what he had done. Nevertheless, Aiba couldn’t pick up his phone to call Nino, to apologize. He didn’t know what he would apologize for.
***
Two weeks had passed since Nino came to the zoo, they simply didn’t call each other and Aiba must admit that he missed Nino. He would go to Nino’s place, apologized and told him the truth. No – apologizing would be enough. Nino didn’t need to know his true feeling; it would only make everything turned worse.
He waited in front of Nino’s apartment with a bottle of Japanese liquor as a present or a sign of his sorry (he didn’t really know), he had no idea what time would Nino come back home, or he probably stayed over at his friend’s place or went for a work trip. He kept on waiting until past midnight and he was about to give up when he heard voices approached.
“That food makes me sick,” Nino said to someone.
“It was French, I didn’t know that you hate western food,” somebody answered, it wasn’t Ohno’s voice, but somehow, Aiba recognized it.
Nino and a man appeared from the end of the corridor, he was Sho whom Aiba met once at the bar. Nino finally spotted Aiba, he looked at him as if seeing a ghost, Nino’s pale face turned paler when their eyes met.
“Nino,” he said.
“What are you doing here?” Nino asked coldly. He slid the key from his pocket and gestured Sho to come in, meanwhile he stayed outside, facing Aiba with arms crossed in front of his chest, his eyes were as cold as the winter wind.
“I’m sorry.”
“There’s nothing to sorry for,” Nino said.
“But…”
“You’re suck, you know that?” Nino looked straight at him, “I didn’t know what happened to you that you suddenly avoid me. I don’t remember that I did something wrong to you, and you said sorry for nothing.”
Silence fell between them, Aiba had lost his ability to speak, his tongue refused to move.
“I’m tired, you’d better go home,” he said while slamming the door in front of Aiba’s nose. Aiba couldn’t say anything, he felt an arrow had stabbed his chest; it hurt that he couldn’t breathe. He put the bottle in front of Nino’s door and walked back home with the miserable feeling he couldn’t bear. He let his tears dropped and he didn’t even bother to wipe it. The cold wind swept his skin as if it understood his agony. He lifted his head to Nino’s window; he was with someone else in the room. Perhaps, that Sho guy was Nino’s date; perhaps Sho had more guts compared to Aiba, to tell Nino his feeling.
***
Jun invited him for another party and because Aiba had nothing to do on the weekend, he agreed to attend it. He knew that Jun invited Nino as well. Aiba had thrown the hope to repair the damage between him and Nino.
“Aiba kun,” someone greeted him. He was Ohno, his camera hanged on his neck and a little girl clung to him. “This is my daughter, she loves the animals so much but couldn’t make it to the zoo because she was sick that time, that’s why I took some pictures in order to make her feel better.”
“Hello,” she greeted Aiba with her tiny voice. “I’m Umika,” she extended her hand to Aiba.
“Hi, Umika chan, do you like the lion?”
“Very much,” she nodded. “Thanks for letting my Papa take the pictures.”
“You’re welcome,” he smiled and patted the girl’s head.
“Where is Nino?” Ohno asked him.
“Oh…he…maybe he’s late,” Aiba stammered, not knowing what to say.
“He really likes you,” Ohno said, “I thought that you’re dating.”
Aiba gulped, he grinned bitterly, not sure what he felt. He excused himself and tried to find Nino among Jun’s guests, but he wasn’t there. He kept on looking until he bumped Sho on his way.
Sho smiled at him, but Aiba couldn’t return it, he felt uneasy towards this man.
“Nino’s not here,” he said. “He’s on the flight to Singapore,” the guy looked straight into his eyes, as if he could read his mind.
“Singapore?” Aiba tried to locate the place inside his mind, it was far from Japan, 7-8 hours flight and Nino was heading there.
“He agreed to work at the branch office,” Sho said. “I thought you already knew.”
“I thought that you and Nino….”
“Oh, sorry about the wrong impression, I stayed over at Nino’s place because I forgot the key to my apartment and it was too late to make a duplicate, besides, Jun wasn’t there to occupy me so I had no choice. I managed to stay at the hotel, but Nino insisted me to stay at his place. We’re friends, Jun will kill me if I date someone else,” Sho grinned.
Aiba slumped to the chair next to him; he drowned his face into his palms. The mixed feeling bathed him and he couldn’t think of what to do. Nino was in love with him, from what Ohno and Jun told him, and he didn’t realize that. He always considered that he was the one who liked Nino, he always thought that his love was one-sided; he always scared of something he wasn’t sure of.
He had given up on Nino since that night, what did Nino think of him now? A coward? A dumb? A Moron?
Did he have another chance?
He left the party and went home as fast as he could. He grabbed his backpack and loaded the stuff he needed, he wasn’t sure whether he would get a flight to Singapore tonight, but he would not give up this time.
He caught a cab to the airport while searching the tickets online, the flights were mostly full, the fastest flight was on the next morning. Aiba leaned his head to the chair and inhaled deeply; if it meant he could find Nino and told him his feeling, waiting over night at the airport wasn’t a big deal.
He sat beside an old woman who smiled at him as he seated. She spoke in English and Aiba couldn’t grab the meaning, so he just nodded.
Aiba didn’t think of it, he couldn’t speak English, he didn’t know how to find Nino in Singapore. Nino worked in a travel agency, he could be anywhere and Aiba didn’t tell him beforehand (they didn’t speak to each other for almost a month after all).
When the plane landed at Changi Airport, he knew that he was in a big trouble, but it wasn’t the right time to pity himself. He wouldn’t come back to Japan before finding Nino and talked to him – properly.
Aiba inhaled the air and enjoyed the sunlight; he went to visit Merlion first, hoping that Nino would be there. A group of Japanese tourist was busy taking pictures, but they seemed to travel without any guide. Today was Nino’s first day at the office, he must be at there, but Aiba didn’t know where it was, so he tried to entertain himself by taking a selfie picture with the Merlion, to forget about his stupidity for awhile.
He walked the city while trying to find a place to stay near China Town. His head was dizzy because the lack of sleep and the changing of temperature between Japan and Singapore. He sat down on a bench after buying a cup of coffee, the battery of his phone was about to die. He looked up to the blue sky, wondering where Nino might be. He imagined Nino would find him here and scolded him; even his angry voice was something he missed the most. He closed his eyes and accidentally dozed off.
When he woke up, it was already dark, his backpack and his phone was gone. Aiba panicked, everything he had was on that bag, his passport, money, and his changing clothes. He rose and managed to go the nearest police station, but how would they help him? He walked aimlessly, maybe he should go to Japanese Embassy to report it, yes, that was the best thing he could do.
“Hey! Looking for this?”
He turned around and saw Nino; his hands were holding his backpack.
“Nino…” Aiba thought that he was hallucinating, but Nino was really there, frowning, but it didn’t matter, Aiba ran to him and hugged him tightly.
“What are you doing here?” Nino asked coldly, his tone was the same with the night when he waited in front of his apartment door.
“Looking for warmth,” Aiba answered, not letting go of Nino who seemed to turn frozen.
“Silly,” Nino said, struggling himself free from Aiba’s embrace and pushed the backpack to his hands. “Next time, don’t doze off in a foreign country, especially when you’re at the random bench,” he said, turning around and leave him.
Aiba chuckled and chased the other guy; that was enough for him; it meant Nino was calm enough to talk to.
“Nino, wait!”
“I know,” Nino faced him and Aiba almost bumped into him, “I forgive you, but I can’t go back to Japan to date with you, in which always end up mess and you always consider it isn’t a date so…”
“Let me expla…”
“…and I was tired of waiting and then you avoided me for no good reason and appeared on my doorstep with an innocent apologize and…”
Aiba pulled Nino to him and kissed his lips, he didn’t need any affirmation now and he was ready if Nino wanted to slap his face. Nino stayed still, though, he kissed Aiba back before pulling himself away from him.
“It doesn’t mean I will listen to your explanation,” Nino said nervously, but Aiba could see an adorable pink color spread all over his neck and cheeks.
“It’s okay,” he said, grabbing Nino’s hand and dragged him forward.
“Wait, where are we going?”
“To your place,” Aiba grinned.
“I never said you could go to my place.”
“Come on, I’m hungry.”
Nino argued, but Aiba knew that was just the other way of saying yes. He felt light for the first time since he got a crush on Nino. He had to make some excuse for his absence to the zoo manager, but it could wait. He didn’t let go of Nino’s hand along the way, gaining attention from the other passengers on the subway train, but he didn’t care. What mattered the most was Nino, he almost lose him, the most precious person for him. Maybe Nino would scold him more often from now on, maybe he would be angry if Aiba didn’t pick up his phone, maybe he would send a poisonous post card if Aiba wasn’t available on skype.
He turned his face to Nino and smiled at him, feeling complete.
