It was a snowy evening when Sho arrived in Aomori. It had been so long since he came back here, perhaps if it wasn't for work, he would never step his feet here anymore.

Sho left Aomori ten years ago when he entered university in Tokyo. His parents had moved as well, so he simply had no reason to be here. Maybe he had, once, but that was a long time ago and he had no guts to remember it. He made a choice to live in Tokyo as he started his college and had no intention of coming back, not after the graduation day. Not after the breakup, since it meant he would be haunted by his memories in this place with someone he used to call his love.

Sho adjusted his eyeglasses and his scarf and walked faster towards the exit. The station was almost the same when he left it a decade ago, except the advertisement board at the main exit which showed a popular idol who promoted the credit card. Sho glanced at his watch; he still had enough time for dinner and reviewed his presentation which he would be delivering the next day. He would be having a meeting with a client to promote a new product of software from his company which launched a month ago. Sho didn't know why he agreed to go for this project; he could deliver it to one of his subordinates, so he didn't need to fight against the cold wind.

When he stepped out of the station, the same scene welcomed him. The coffee shop across the street still looked the same, the ramen restaurant beside it still smeared with people. Sho considered for a while on what to eat before choosing to eat udon at the nearest food hall.

He spread his sight around and wished to find one of his school friends or someone he knew, but after ten years, probably it was hard to recognize them.

"I hate snow."

Sho heard someone spoke to his friend from the table next to him.

"It makes me even harder to wake up in the morning," the same man continued. The voice was deep and somehow familiar. Sho turned his head to see the man, but all he could see was his back. He shook his head; maybe he imagined things and some people had a similar voice. He must have mistaken it.

Sho waited for his client in the lobby. The receptionist had told him that the manager usually came at 8 in the morning. Sho glanced at his watch; he showed up too early, like always. He decided to buy a cup of coffee at the shop near the lobby which has just opened and he doubted that they were ready to serve a customer.

"Excuse me," he said. The shopkeeper was still busy switching the lamps and the coffee machine and somehow, Sho felt guilty to himself that he became a morning person.

"Can I have a cup of coffee?" he tried.

The shopkeeper finally turned his head at him and Sho almost dropped his briefcase. He recognized that face, even though it had changed more mature and of course, more handsome.

"Sho?" he said while smiling broadly.

Jun, Sho mentioned the name inside his head because his lips were glued to each other.

"What a surprise, I thought that you have forgotten this place," Jun said. He approached Sho and scanned him from head to toes, his sight made Sho all nervous. "You're here for work," Jun concluded as he saw his briefcase.

"Mmm,yes," Sho tried to act as casual as he could. He regretted his decision to step his feet to this coffee shop and why Jun here of all places? Right in the building where Sho would deliver his presentation and after seeing Jun's face, Sho was sure that everything he prepared last night had flown away.

"Take a seat, I'll get your coffee," Jun said and left Sho without waiting for his response.

Sho gulped hard; he closed his eyes for a second and opened them again, making sure that it wasn't just his hallucination. Was this the reason he came here? meeting Jun after ten years. He couldn't forget the day he broke up with Jun, the day he thought that he would never come back here ever again. Not that he didn't want to see Jun again because he missed that face every single day for all these ten years, he just didn't want to lie that he could bear seeing Jun with someone else. He didn't hear a thing from Jun or from his other classmates and he was relief that nobody entered the same university with him, so he could keep his life a secret.

"Here it is," Jun put the cup in front of him and joined him sitting down there.

"It's been a while, how are you?" Jun asked.

Always good in opening a conversation, Sho thought.

"I'm doing well, how about you?"

"I can't say it all good," he smiled and it was enough to melt the entire iceberg in the North Pole.

Sho took the cup and sipped the coffee so he could avoid Jun's eyes. "This is delicious," he praised.

"Thanks," Jun said. "You don't need to pay for that," the man continued.

"Much obliged, what can I do for you in return?" Sho asked and regretted right away after saying those words.
Jun thought for a while, "Maybe the dinner with your life as the main topic."

"Well, that's unfair if we only talk about my life," Sho said.

"My life is boring," Jun shook his head.

"I don't mind," Sho sipped his coffee again and he made a mental note that he had to call his secretary right away to look for a new bullet train ticket to Tokyo which supposed to be tonight. "I have to go," Sho glanced at his watch, "thanks for the coffee, Jun."

"You're welcome," Jun stood up, "and good luck."

Sho left the coffee shop and still wished that it was only his hallucination.

Jun showed at 7 at the restaurant where they promised to meet. He wore a navy-blue tweed jacket with a nice baseball cap meanwhile Sho was still on his working suit. They sat across from each other and talked randomly. Sho didn’t remember when was the last time he felt nervous about meeting someone. He had no intention of having a relationship since he broke up with Jun and he was too busy with work. It seemed that the love stuff wasn’t a part of his life anymore.

Jun grew up perfectly, even though his shy smile still remained, but overall, he was a high confident man with a special charm. Sho wondered what kind of life that Jun had been leading for the past ten years. What kind of people had he been meeting, what kind of places had he been visiting during summer holiday?

“When will you return to Tokyo?” Jun asked as their order being served.

“Tomorrow, the first bullet train,” Sho answered.

Jun nodded.

“Have you ever thought of returning here?”

Sho sipped the ice tea and wiped his mouth before answering, “This place is way too cold for my liking.”

“That’s not an answer,” Jun said.

Sho coughed, trying to find the right answer for Jun’s question. Perhaps Jun expected him to say yes – which wasn’t an option – because he couldn’t leave his current job and he had no reason of coming back.

“Not for now,” Sho finally said.

Jun sipped his lemon juice and nodded once again. “I wish you could stay longer. This place has become colder since you’ve been gone.”

The words were simply spoken and it seemed that Jun was murmuring to himself instead of talking to Sho. Jun lifted his head and looked through his eyes, the man was smiling, but it was just a broken smile. Sho felt that he was cornered; it wasn’t his fault that they broke up. Well, he couldn’t recall whose fault was it in the first place.

“Jun, I don’t want to talk about it.”

“Of course, you don’t,” Jun said, “you told me the same thing that day.”

“Look,” Sho calmed himself in order to keep his voice low, “I’m sorry for that day. I am truly sorry. I never forgive myself for hurting you and I live with that burden up until now.”

Jun laughed bitterly, “I’ve been waiting for you. I never stopped believe that we’ll cross path again.”

“That’s very kind of you,” Sho said. “But, we’re not high school boys anymore. The adult world is so much more realistic.”

“You’re right,” Jun sipped the lemon juice until the last drop. “Can we walk the city? You know, like what we did back then.”

“Jun, it’s minus 15 degrees out there.”

“Oh, come on.”

Sho had no choice other than following Jun’s wish. It was freaking cold outside and Sho didn’t bring any hat to cover his head. Jun walked one step ahead of him and started talking about their school days as if they never separated as if they never broke up. Sho laughed at the right moment and commented shortly when Jun paused and he didn’t know how they ended up holding each other’s hand.

Jun turned to him and gave him a warm smile while squishing Sho’s fingers softly. It had been ten years, Sho reminded himself, yet, Jun’s warmth never changed. They walked in silence and stopped in front of an old inn. Sho knew it was the worst idea, but Jun had led him inside and ordered a room for one night.

“Jun, I have to go back to Tokyo tomorrow morning,” Sho murmured, but his words were swallowed to the coldness.
“I missed you,” Jun whispered in his ears.

The words had sent Sho to unconsciousness; he didn’t try to look for a justification for what they would do. Jun was too tempting after all and he couldn’t resist him. He didn’t care whether Jun might be belonging to someone else or not; he held the man tight in his arms and listened to his heartbeat. He kissed Jun’s lips, touched his bare skin, felt his breath and inhaled his scent. Sho felt that he had just released himself from a tightrope which had been tiding him up for the past ten years.

He wondered what kind of life he would have been leading with Jun if they didn’t break up back then. He wondered whether they would have gotten married and lived happily in a small apartment somewhere in this city. He wondered whether Jun would have scolded him if he came home late after having some drink with his colleagues.
Maybe they had to spend this night to the fullest, for the redemption of those ten years.

Life could be so strange and unpredictable, Sho thought as he rode the bullet train to go back to Tokyo. It felt so much harder to leave the city now compared with ten years ago. His mind flew to Jun; that man must be in his coffee shop right now, preparing to open. He would welcome his customers with that heart-melting smile and wished them a good day. The image made Sho’s stomach clenched unpleasantly; he suddenly didn’t want to share that smile with the other people.

He closed his eyes and tried to get some sleep, but the image of Jun’s face bothered him. Sho gave up and let his thoughts about Jun ruled his head.

It was two weeks later when he got a phone call from his client in Aomori. They told him that they would use the software and would like to have another meeting to sign the contract.

“We can go to Tokyo and meet up in your office,” the man on the other side said.

“I prefer to go to yours,” Sho answered immediately. “Just arrange the meeting,” he continued.

He made a mental note that he would go there two days earlier, or perhaps he should prepare the other proposal aside from work this time – just in case.
