Summary: Jun was an interior designer for Remarkable Design Graphic Company, his life had been simple until he met Ohno – a perfectionist client who was very difficult to deal with. On the other hand, Jun eventually found out that Ohno was also a loving dad to his only son…
Monday was always a busy and frustrating day. It was the day where everyone seemed to have a bad mood and ready to snap at the first person who said unfunny jokes.
The Monday where Jun was no better than everybody else
This particular Monday was just another hell for him and all of the team members in his section. They had just gotten a big project, the deadline was waiting, but they were far from finishing it. He hadn’t slept for two days in a row, sitting in front of his computer all the time with a big cup of coffee, trying hard to complete his assignment.
He yawned heavily, not even trying to hide it from his colleagues. They were lack of sleep as well; everybody had bags under their eyes and walked around like zombies.
“Remarkable Design Graphic, good morning, how may I assist you?” Jun picked the phone, holding it between his head and shoulder while grabbing his pencil to take a note.
“Jun, it’s me,” the voice on the other side was familiar. It was unusual for Sho to call Jun to the office, normally he would call him through his private number “Sho san, if you want to check on our progress, I have to tell you that we haven’t finished yet,
“I know,” Sho cut him, “I’ve finished my part, so maybe I can help you for the remaining.”
“That’s very kind of you,” Jun held his yawn, “what time will you be here?”
“That’s why I’m calling,” Sho said, “I can’t make it to the office today. I need your help to substitute me, there are two meetings at the third floor, one with the management and another one with the construction,” Sho said meanwhile Jun noted what he said quickly, making sure that he didn’t miss a thing.
“You can work in my office, you know, answering the phone and send a few emails to our clients.”
“But, Sho san, I need to finish the deadline.”
“Rest assures; I’ll do something about it. I want the meeting report by 4 pm, can you do that?”
“Sure,” Jun made another note and circled it with red ink.
“I have to go, we’ll talk again later,” the man ended his call.
Jun returned the phone to its booth and read his note once again. He told his subordinate that he had to attend meetings after lunch and informed them that he would substitute Sho for today and needed to work in his office. He took his notebook and entered Sho’s room at the left corner, the door was unlocked and Sho forgot to turn off the air conditioner the night before, which resulted in a freakin’ cold room
Jun walked across the room, turned off the air conditioner and switched on the computer. He typed the password, the screen showed him their company’s logo, but it was almost hidden behind the folders on the desktop, since Sho was too lazy to move them.
Jun had been working with Sho for three years; he was a brilliant man with high workaholic level, he rarely took day off and even worked on Sundays and long weekends (it was lucky that he never dragged Jun to his never ending overtime). He graduated from Architect Faculty and started his design graphic company right after. He came from rich family, and to build his own company wasn’t a big deal. He recruited the best graduations and he asked Jun to work together with him. Sho trusted him more than anyone else and appointed him as the head of design section or sometimes as his deputy..
He knew that there were rumors about him having an affair with Sho and it had spread all around the office, but Jun got an impression that Sho let it happen. The man didn’t try to clarify that there was nothing between them, they were simply work colleagues, nothing more. Even though Sho often invited Jun to his apartment, but all they talked about was work. They never had any physical encounters, let alone drunk-kissing, not that Jun didn’t expect it to happen.
He would be lying to himself if he said that he wasn’t interested in Sho. That man would be the first on his list if he was asked about his type. Nonetheless, he didn’t want to start an illicit affair in the office and messed up his work. Sho trusted most of the works to Jun; maybe he could count it as an acknowledgment – in some way.
It was almost nine in the evening when he finally left the office. His shoulders were stiff and he almost couldn’t feel his body, the sleepy feeling ruled every particle of his brain.
“Need a ride?”
He was walking on the sidewalk when a car stopped right beside him. Sho’s head poked outside, he gestured Jun to get in before he could answer.
“I’m so tired,” Jun said, fastening his seatbelt and leaning his head to the seat.
“So do I,” Sho answered while stepping the gas and drove the car to the highway. “This project is draining our energy, but you know, Jun, if they are satisfy with our work, there will be another bigger project. We can develop our company and perhaps open a franchise.”
“It would be better with more employees,” Jun commented with a bit of sarcasm.
“It’s not easy to find people that we can trust,” Sho said, glancing shortly at him.
Jun smiled slightly, it was a compliment, even though Sho didn’t say it out loud. He must admit that he was proud that he was someone Sho could trust the most.
“Jun, what about some beer?”
Jun heard what Sho said, but he couldn’t open his eyes. He drifted to a deep sleep before he realized it.

“Wear it,” Sho handed him a slim box.
They would hand their finished project to their client today and Sho was surprisingly nervous. The client was the developer of ‘Man’s Tokyo’ building and he wanted a fresh design for his upcoming building. If he liked the design, there would be more to come, like Sho said. More developers would entrust the design to their company and that was the achievement every architect wished for.
Jun opened the box and found a dark blue tie; he slid it out and took a look at it before moving his gaze towards Sho.
“Your tie is worn out, don’t embarrass me in front of our client,” Sho said, smiling at Jun.
“Thanks,” Jun loosened his tie and changed it to the new one. He made sure that there were unnecessary wrinkles on his shirt before wearing his jacket.
The meeting, was a brief one,but Sho made sure that both parties were satisfied with the result. They shook hands and signed the documents, took a few pictures and ended the meeting.
“We have to celebrate it tonight,” Sho whispered to Jun as their client left the venue.
“Yeah, and two days off,” Jun commented.
Sho gave him a don’t-be-kidding-me look and patted his shoulder.
“Let’s get some massage,” he said.
Sho’s favorite spa was near the love hotel in Ginza, he had dragged Jun there for a couple of times and the latter always raised his brows to notice the hotel next door. Sho, meanwhile didn’t care that the hotel presence might be bothering Jun, he said that this place offered the best service with a good price.
“You can try another place,” Sho said as he saw an unpleasant expression on Jun’s face.
“It’s fine here,” he smiled slightly to his friend who started unbolting his shirt.
Sho’s body was well-built, his muscles formed beautiful lines, his upper arms stiffened as he lifted it to hang his shirt on the porch. Jun gulped, not even trying to take his eyes off of Sho’s body.
“Jun, take off your clothes,” Sho said, turning his head at Jun with puzzled look.
“Ah, y-yes,” Jun’s cheek turned warm, he hid it as best as he could from Sho as he looked down to unbutton his shirt. He imagined he and Sho at the building next door, Sho unbuttoned his shirt, Sho approached him with that muscular arms.
.
“Jun, are you okay? You look pale,” Sho said, leaningto him and checking his forehead.
Jun shivered and shifted further from Sho, “I’m okay,” he murmured, leaving the man towards the massaging cubicle.
It was close, Jun thought as he shuthis eyes and pushed Sho’s image off of his head.
***
The crazy weeks had finally passed and Jun could enjoy a peaceful Sunday – at last – without the need to check his email every now and then or glanced at his phone to make sure that Sho had received his progress report. Today was as peaceful as it could be; he went to Harajuku to take a few portraits – it wasn’t a place for a late-twenties-man, but he loved to see the teenagers with the colorful clothes and their extraordinary accessories.
A few girls looked at him as he walked passed them; maybe he was too flashy with his stylish boots, a dark red jacket and a navy blue scarf around his neck.
“He’s cool,” one of them said.
“Wanna greet him?” the other answered.
Jun slowed his pace in case those girls wanted to chase him for chit-chat, but they never came and he felt stupid to expect something like that. He continued walking, searched for an interesting object to be captured.,
His camera eventually caught a boy who walked across the street. He had an identical camera like Jun’s and busily took pictures of the crowded street and the buildings around him. Jun lifted his camera once again and managed to take the kid’s picture, but he was no longer across the street.
“Don’t take pictures without permission,” the boy said to Jun out of the blue.
“Sorry, ,” he apologized and lowered his camera.. “ Do you want to delete it?,” he handed the camera to the boy.
The boy took the camera from Jun’s hand and erased his picture. He kept on clutching Jun’s camera and checked the remaining pictures in it.
“, The pictures you’ve taken are beautiful, how did you do that?” he asked.
“Let’s say I practiced a lot,” Jun smiled at him, “you’re here to take pictures, don’t you?”
“It’s a task from school,” he grumbled. “I don’t like taking pictures at the first place.”
“Where are your friends?” Jun asked.
The kid’s face turned gloomy as he shook his head, “I came alone.”
“Me too,” Jun said, “we can take pictures together if you want to. May I know your name?”
“Kazunari,” the kid mumbled.
“Kazunari kun, I’m Jun, nice to meet you,” Jun extended his hand to shake the kid’s. “In what grade are you?”
“Third grade of junior high school,” he answered with rather plain tone. “I don’t like school.”
“I didn’t like it too when I was at your age,” Jun offered an encouraging smile at the kid, “but you’ll gonna miss it once you graduate.”
Kazunari didn’t say a reply as he followed Jun’s steps; they headed towards the center of the city where the teenagers gathered. Jun showed how to take good pictures or how to take it from the right angle. Kazunari did as told and he was thrilled when he looked at the result.
“You’re doing well,” Junsaid. .
“It’s nothing compared to yours,” he shook his head.
“You need more practice,” Jun said, spreading his sight to his surroundings and took portrait with his own camera.
He remembered what Sho said about Jun’s hobby of taking pictures, the man promised him to take him to Nara, but they were too busy with work and hadn’t realized the plan up until now.
Jun glanced at his watch, it was almost one in the afternoon “Are you hungry?” he asked Kazunari.
The boy nodded.
“Let’s eat something. What do you want to have?”
Kazunari hesitated to follow him, he looked down at his shoes.
“Kazunari kun?”
“My father said that it’s dangerous to eat together with a stranger,” he murmured. “I have to go back home.”
“You’ll be starving,” Jun approached the boy. “Your father isn’t here and I’m not a bad guy,” he smiled. “Let’s keep it a secret from your father.”
Kazunari lifted his head to meet his gaze and nodded.
The encounter with this kid felt so weird to Jun. Junior high school student usually thought that adult was not a part of their world. They normally belong in a group and talked out loud with their own language which Jun would never understand. Jun glanced at the boy, he hoped that the kid was alone not because he had no friends, but simply because he wanted to. Perhaps, there was a possibility that this kid was a victim of bullying in his school.
They entered a restaurant and took a seat at the corner part near the window. A waiter approached their table and handed a menu book.
“I want a hamburger,” Kazunari pointed at the menu.
“Sounds good, me too,” Jun said as he called the waiter to take their orders.
“Are you a photographer?” Kazunari asked, gesturing at Jun’s camera.
“No,” Jun shook his head, “I happen to like taking pictures. I work in an architecture company.”
Kazunari took his camera and switched it on, “It’s my father’s camera, he loves taking pictures too, wanna see?” he chose one of the pictures and showed it to Jun.
The photo was taken in a mountain during autumn; it had a great angle, the light from the sunset was captured perfectly. The reddish leaves of maple trees looked natural, the picture looked alive as if Jun could see the leaves moved by the autumn wind.
“It’s so beautiful,” he complimented the photo.
“But he’s too busy lately that he can’t take pictures that often,” Kazunari pushed the button and pointed the camera at Jun. “Can I take your portrait?”
The kid had clicked the camera before Jun could give an answer.
“Hey, that’s unfair,” Jun tried to reach the camera, but Kazunari had switched it off and stuffed it back to its place.
They ate the hamburger in silence. Jun slid out his phone from his bag and checked whether Sho sent him anything related to their work; he was glad there was none. Kazunari, meanwhile enjoyed his food while glancing to the space.
“Do you think that we will meet again?” Kazunari asked as they left the restaurant.
Jun chuckled as he heard that, “Sure, we’ll meet again.”
“I have your picture already, so I wouldn’t forget you.”
Jun was touched by the innocence words from the cute teenager before him, he patted Kazunari’s shoulder, “Good luck with your school, Kazunari kun.”
“Thanks, by the way, you can call me Kazu,” Kazunari flashed a broad smile for the first time, “Bye, Jun san.”
“Bye bye, Kazu kun,” Jun waved his hand at the boy as they separated at the station platform.
. His thoughts went to Sho; what kind of Sunday that he had today, maybe he was working on some new project plan and would deliver it to Jun tomorrow morning.
He wished that they could enjoytheir day off together; free from work-related topic, maybe went to a place far from Tokyo where they could see maple trees.
Maple trees
Jun recalled the pictures of the maple trees Kazu had showed him. The scene had left a deep impression in his heart – for some reason. He wondered what kind of person Kazu’s dad was, but then he pushed the thoughts out of his head. The possibility to meet the boy again was almost close as zero. Their encounter was just a pure coincidence. He leaned his head against the seat, it wasn’t the right time to think about uncertain things, he had a lot of things to worry about on Monday.
To be continued
a.n: It’s been forever since our last joint fic. We have been working for this series for two years (such a long time). We finally made it somehow… We originally planned to post this chapter on Jun's birthday, we are one day late, but I guess it's still okay to celebrate our beloved youngest member's birthday.
