Human Doll

Every day is just the same for him. Go to work in the morning, returned home in the evening, or sometimes he created some figure or painted something. The hobby that he did after work in his endless-lonely-days.

He works as one of the bread maker in a bakery and rarely talked to his co-workers, or maybe he even never talk about his private life to anyone. He enjoyed his own little world very much. But sometimes he needed somebody to talk with, especially in this cold night, where the leaves started to fall, where his hands shook coldly beneath his gloves. He just wished somebody would have held him.

He started to move his hand onto his canvas, but he wasn’t in the mood to paint now.  He put his brush aside and took his jacket again. He thought of went out for a beer at his favourite bar where one of his friend work. Not a close friend, just the guy that he already knew. He walked to the bar and got a usual welcoming sentence from the boy behind the counter.

“Irasshaimase, Ohno san,” he bowed shortly which was unnecessary.

“Good day, Nino,” Ohno took a seat and mentioned his order.

“You always look trouble in your day off,” Nino commented when he saw Ohno’s face which showed  bored colour.

“Lucky guess,” Ohno answered. He brought the beer to his mouth and drank it in few gulps while his eyes wandered around. There were few people who sit around the table, talking lightly to their friends.

“How’s your work?” Nino asked again after finished serving the other guests. The bored guy just played with the glass on his hands.

“Nothing special,” Ohno said shortly, suddenly he wanted to go home already.

“I still think that your job doesn’t fit you, you should become an artist, or painter,” Nino watched him drinking, obviously waiting for his answer, but Ohno just keep silent. Maybe he should do as Nino said, but he likes his job at the bakery, making bread was one of artistic thing for him.

“Can you do me a favour?” Nino leaned to him when he just kept his mouth shut as always.

“What?” Ohno finished his first bottle and he looked at Nino.

“My friend, errrr or let’s call him my crush has his birthday next month and I really want to give him something different,” Nino rolled his eyes but smiled happily,

“I want to give him my statue, but I can’t find anyone to make it for me, and then I think about you.” The bartender jolted around his words which made Ohno sure he really like this crush of his.

“So?” Ohno asked blankly, knew where it will end.

“Can you make a sculpture of me, please?” Nino begged for him. Ohno never made any sculpture before and he didn’t know what it will look like if he makes one. Nevertheless, sculpting sounds interesting, so he agreed without thinking any further, perhaps he can find other artistic thing to be created.

After the long three weeks he finally finished Nino sculpture. Nino was very excited to see how similar his face was on the wood that Ohno used. He thanked Ohno uncountable times and gave him 12 cans of beer as a reward. Ohno only chuckled while seeing his friend’s disbelief look when he checked the sculpted piece of wood on his hamburger hand.

“He would be so happy,” Nino said confidently and brought his sculpture home, leaving Ohno alone again in his house.

Ohno looked outside his windows while drank the beer Nino gave him. He blankly stared at the trees in the far corner of his back yard and suddenly a face crossed his mind. He didn’t know where it came from, maybe the effect of the alcohol he just drank.

He took a pencil, drew a sketch quickly, afraid that the face he just thought would disappear from his head, but it wasn’t. He added every detail on the paper in front of him and when he finished, he can’t stoped seeing what he just draw.

The man in his drawing had thick black hair which almost reached his shoulder, the high cheek bones under two big pretty eyes, the artistic eyebrows decorated his face and the kissable lips. Ohno thought he drew the lips too thick but he saw it as the perfect match and completing the face perfectly. He added a little more touch to it and stepped back to see his creation from different angle.

“Wow,” he even admiring his own work.

The man in his drawing was just perfect, a man he never saw before, only in his head just now due to his deep thought of nothingness but it leads him to this face. He would make another sculpture from this drawing, yes, he will. He planned to find a perfect wood this time and with that, he faced his days forward with a bit excitement to finish it.

Unfortunately, it took him more time than when he sculpts Nino’s sculpture. Since the New Year coming in, Ohno often work over time for the order. He just finished half of the statue and even forgotten about it for almost a month.

The winter had finished when he finally had enough time in his day off to continue it. He just realized the wood was a bit higher than him, maybe the trader made a mistake when Ohno mentioned the size, but he didn’t mind it. He finished the face first before moving on to its body. He looked to it carefully before deciding what kind of clothes would match this face.

Finally the sculpture had finished, it looks exactly like the drawing, except the height. Ohno had to look up a bit to meet the face. He touched the wooden scarf which wrapped its neck perfectly, found himself were stunned by his second hand-made sculpture. He shook his head, felt a bit weird crept into him. He just turned off the light and walked out of the room. He didn’t even notice that it was almost midnight and he had to work the next day. He dropped his back to the bed and dozed off.

He took a brief inspection to his art room before he went for work. Found the sculpture still on its place, well, where it would be? It’s a wood after all. He called himself stupid in his head for expecting the miracle to see the handsome man was waiting for him there.

“Ohno kun are you okay?” his boss, Sho, looked at him with worry glance. “You look unfocused today, like there’s something bothering you,” Sho added.

“No, I’m fine Sho kun, don’t worry,” Ohno blinked few times to push his day dreaming away.

He must be lack of sleep. As he arrived home, he headed his art room immediately and for some unexplainable reason, he brought the sculpture to his room. He thought perhaps it will be nice for the decoration. What he didn’t expect was the dream he got after bringing it to his bed room.

The handsome man smiled to him with the blue scarf on his neck, called his name, ‘Satoshi’ before Ohno woke up with the weird sensation in his stomach. He remembered the mole on that man’s lips, which made him glanced to the wooden sculpture beside his window and imagine the exact mole on the sculpture clean lips. This was out of any senses, he thought about it too much.

The similar dream came, but he didn’t want to wake up if he saw that man in his dream. He even named the sculpture ‘Jun’, a name which suddenly appeared in the corner of his head, and weirdly, it fitted the sculpture figure. Maybe it has a soul, but there’s no such thing in this world. So one day, he moved it to his living room, since he felt the sculpture been watching him when he was naked.

The spring ended fast, replaced by the hot summer and Ohno still lonely as always. He often went to the bar or paint when he had enough time. But other than that, he almost doing nothing.

Nino suggested that he should meet up with somebody to fill the hole on his chest, but no matter how many girls Nino brought to him, it ended up with disappointment. He wasn’t interested enough to talk with them. Then here he was, alone again for another year.

November had come, which meant another birthday that he would face all alone, without anyone brought him a cake and ask him to blow the candles. A week before his birthday, Nino asked him to go to a party with his friends, but Ohno refused softly, said that he didn’t like to spend his time among the crowd. So he made a cake for himself in his birthday at the bakery, brought it home with few cans of beer, it’s better to celebrate it alone, he thought.

He withdrew the key from his pocket and unlocked the door, put the cake on his table along with the beer. The room was dark, but he left it, then he lights the candles. He was about to blow it when he heard a weird sound from his kitchen.

“A cat?” he wag his hands to light off the candles and switched on the lamp to see what made the sound. He sneaked to the kitchen and blinked a few times to assure that his eyes wasn’t mistaken.

“A thief!” he took the nearest wine bottle from his cupboard for a weapon, when he heard a voice.

“Miisteer Ohno,”

“Who’s that?” he stepped closer and what he saw made him almost faint to the floor. It was impossible, he just had a hallucination.

“You’re not real,” he shook his head, still grip the bottle tightly on his hand.

“It’s-mee, J-jun,” the man spoke with the weird pronunciation, like the two years old kid. His eyes showed a scary expression that made Ohno put down his hands.

“No, you’re not real,” Ohno replied again, meanwhile the man, no, his sculpture smiled to him innocently.

I-am, Jun,” he said slowly, “Miisteerr Ohno made me,” he pointed at himself which Ohno realized that this man was just like what he had dreamed about for all these times.

Ohno slowly put down his hand. He stepped closer to the man, still gripped the bottle. The man blinked to him, stared sharply at him. It must be a joke, there was nothing that can bring a sculpture alive and stand right in front of him, with the real black hair, real skin, and real handsome face.

“I-am-here-for Miister Ohno’s birthday,” the man spoke again.

He approached Ohno a bit so he can see him better and Ohno must hold his breath when his eyes caught the scene in front of him. Clearly it was the sculpture that he had been created, perhaps he made it too perfect that he couldn’t find any flaw on it. He was tall and proportional. His two big beautiful eyes framed with thick eyebrows followed Ohno movement.

Ohno paid attention more to the man, finally put his bottle aside. He forgot about his birthday cake which waiting for him and kept looking at the sculpture, still can’t believe it was real.

“So, you’re really Jun?” he asked doubtfully.

“Yes, I- am, Miisster- Ohno- gave- me- the- name,” the man nodded strongly.

He walked to Ohno who stepped behind, still afraid of this new comer. But the man smiled sadly to him and Ohno just realized he also has three moles on his lips, something he never made on the sculpture but he saw it on his dreams lately.

“Miister-Ohno-afraid-of-me.”

“I just....this is too weird, I mean you’re a sculpture, and now you’re a man, it was out of my senses, maybe I drank too much,” Ohno shook his head. This was the strangest birthday for him, where a live sculpture waiting for him and called him “Miister” in the wrong pronunciation.

“I think I’d better go to sleep, this is just a weird dream,” Ohno mumbled to himself. He planned to blow the candles then go to bed, but Jun blocked his way.

“P-please-wait, let-me-take that –for –you,” Jun pointed to the cake, before Ohno couldn’t answer, Jun already took the cake and bring it to him.

However, Jun brought the cake as it is since he didn’t know the candles must be lighted up first, but what do you expect from a living sculpture? Ohno lighten up the candles again and he blew them in one breath. He glanced to the face in front of him, the lips curved in beautiful smile, finally he replied the smile and he couldn’t remember what he did after that.

When he woke up the next day, he found himself at the sofa, the light from his window sneaked through the curtain. He rubbed his eyes and sit down, tried to grab his memory from the night before. He had a dream, the sculpture alive, called him Miister, his name was Jun, he looked around, and there was no sign of someone else in the room.

He rose from the sofa, went to his room to change his clothes and surprised to find the sculpture there. He remembered he already moved it to the living room, but why it was here? He looked at it closely, the birthday cake cream remain on its hand. Ohno touched it, felt the cold wood welcomed his fingers, so it wasn’t just a dream.

“Jun,” he whispered, but the wooden sculpture stayed silent. Ohno laughed at himself, but at the corner of his heart, he hoped that he can see Jun again in the same package as last night.

He goes to work normally, didn’t speak at all for all day. He just wanted to return home quickly, but when he opened the door there was nothing weird. Jun was just a wooden sculpture which stood steady in his room.

Considered himself as a dumb, he pushed his hope away after two weeks passed since his birthday and nothing happened. He returned to his ordinary days, made the breads every day, drank beer, paint and went fishing in his day off.

Nino still insisted on his idea to meet him up with all the girls he knew while Ohno can’t even lay his eyes on them. None of them has three tempting moles on their lips or the perfect clear eyes or the wide smile. Even though he only once saw Jun’s smile but he almost see the living sculpture every night in his dreams. Jun with blue scarf waved his hands in front of his door and welcomed him after work.

“Ohno-san, it’s time for you to look for a date. When will you stop to prevent your lonely feeling?” Nino asked him when he went for another drink to the bar where Nino works.

“I’m not interested enough,” Ohno answered.

It was almost six months since his strange birthday and he still went home every evening with the same hope, to see Jun alive again. He regretted that he didn’t talk any longer with Jun that night. He walked home with the same thought, found Jun the sculpture in his room. His finger touched it, stroked it softly.

“I wish you were alive for more nights,” he spoke to it and felt the coldness entered his heart even more.

***

He didn’t know how he faced his days for these few months, when the autumn came, spread the cold wind everywhere. He worked himself up all days in a week, even on his off days, so he can drown himself in what he was doing. If he just sat down at his house, he couldn’t think of another thing except Jun, the unreal wooden sculpture that came alive by the miracle, showing itself once when he had his birthday a year ago. It had been that long since Ohno saw that handsome man at his kitchen.

A day which changed his age came. He didn’t want to go home and spent the night alone, so he went somewhere, didn’t even buy any cake to celebrate his special day. He rent a boat and decided to go for fishing all night. As he arrived at the sea, the cold wind blew, bit his bare skin but he didn’t care, as long as he could forget his lonely birthday.

Ohno looked up to the stars, humming softly to himself and wondered if there’s someone who was created for him in this real world, not his never ending fantasy about Jun. He sighed and it seemed the nature also wanted to torture him because he couldn’t catch any fish at all that time.

Finally, he surrendered and decided to go home. It was almost 4 am. He yawned and headed his house, felt dizzy and dumb. When he opened the door, he never expected there would be a messed up cake awaited him above the table, with “Happy Birthday Miister Ohno” written with purple cream on it. Ohno rushed to his room, wished that he would see Jun waited there for him with the stammered words and strange pronunciation.

But the room was silenced....

Jun was just a wooden sculpture....

“Jun,” he touched the cold wood with his shaking hands, felt completely dumb. He should be home for the night if he knew Jun was waiting for him to go home, to celebrate his birthday once in a year. But he wasn’t, he spent his time with useless fishing, how stupid he was.

Ohno accidentally slumped to the floor, laid his head to Jun’s wooden feet. He cried, yes he did. He poured all of his depressed feeling there. If only he could turn back the time or found out the secret to make Jun alive, to become a human, the most beautiful one.

“Ohno kun, you look unhealthy, did something happen?” Sho asked him when Ohno worked the next day. Maybe his face showed a great disappointed that Sho can see, but Ohno confusedly shook his head, but then he nodded.

“I think so,” he answered. He couldn’t just keep this matter for himself, he needs to talk to someone, even though he wasn’t so close with his boss but Sho was a great boss and listened to every story of his employees.

“Sho kun, do you believe in miracle?” Ohno asked doubtfully.

“Let’s say I believe it,” Sho answered calmly, helped Ohno with the powder while talking.

“Is there any way you can get someone who only exists in your fantasy became a real person?” Ohno looked to his boss’ face which changed, seems he was thinking of the best answer.

“As long as you believe in it,” Sho finally answered. He gave a weak smile to Ohno who still thinking of Jun and kept the cake inside his refrigerator, just to prove that he didn’t dream about it.

“I do,” Ohno nodded, “But it is a thing that you hardly believe,” he returned his attention to the powder in front of him and continued his work.

“Thanks Sho kun,” he mumbled. Sho patted his shoulder and left him alone in the room.

When he arrived home that night, the first thing he did was talking to his wooden man. He knew how crazy it was, but he just wanted to do it. He told the sculpture about his feeling, about his loneliness, thanked him for the cake and said something that he only kept inside his mind for all this time. About how beautiful his days would be if he can face them with someone like Jun. He looked at Jun for a while before took a bath and decided to sleep faster.

The days changed quickly, Ohno always do the same thing when he arrives home after work, a habit he started since then. He told everything to Jun, considered that the wooden man was alive, until one day...

He came home after a hard day, because Sho got many orders and he had to check everything was sent out in perfect condition. He flop his back onto the sofa, didn’t realize that the house was much cleaner and neater compared to the time he left this morning. He rushed to his room, but the same scene welcomed him, Jun was still a wooden sculpture after all.

“Maybe I imagined it,” he mumbled to himself but he gave a smile to the sculpture. Perhaps something good would happen, but Ohno wasn’t so sure about it, he just needed to wait and see.

***

“Ohno kun, the branch shop need your guidance, I hope you can go there to teach them,” Sho handed him a paper which contained the detail of his task for another shop at the other city, “You will stay there until November 26th, please do your best.”

“I will,” Ohno read the paper and just realized that he would be home on his birth day.

His blood suddenly stirred when he remembered about Jun. He must be home on time, Jun must probably come for his birthday for sure. Perhaps if he was lucky enough he can blow the candles together this time, remembering they couldn’t do that on his previous birthday.

He went to the branch shop and spent almost two weeks there to guide the new employees. Two weeks without Jun was enough to make him empty, though Jun was just a wooden sculpture which decorated his room.

“Thanks for your hard work,” Ohno bowed to all the new staffs when finally he can return home after long training days.

He couldn’t wait to go home and realized that today was his birthday. He wanted to be in his house more than anything now. Jun might already been alive and wait for him. He really couldn’t be late again or he has to wait for another one year.

However the rain ruined everything. There was a long traffic jam and needed extra hours to arrive at the last stop. Ohno checked his watch, there was only an hour left before 12. One hour before the day changed into November 27th and he would lose his chance to meet Jun.

The rain fell faster, blurred the lights and sent the cold air everywhere. Ohno let the water wetting his clothes when he ran faster towards his house. Didn’t care that he made everything on him wet, including his bag which contained the receipt book he just created.

He rushed into his house, searched for the key to unlock the door. His hand trembling from cold, nervousness and frightened. Finally he was able to open the door. His shoes left the track on the floor when he didn’t even care to put it off and marched to his room instead. He opened his room and there he was.

“Jun!”

“Miister Oh-no.”

But there’s something weird. Jun was just half-human. His bottom part until his waist was already changed into wooden sculpture.

“No, don’t go,” Ohno gripped the hand. Jun squished weakly.

“Happ-y birth d-day,” slowly but sure he changed to the wood again. Ohno felt the stiff texture on his fingers when Jun’s hand changed too.

“No, you must stay, please.”

Ohno stared to the eyes which look sad just like him when Jun completely turned into a wooden sculpture. He slumped to the floor with eyes as wet as his clothes, curled up on Jun’s wooden feet, hold them as if it could bring Jun alive again.

“Jun, you should stay, accompanying my days,” Ohno bit his lip, felt the tears mixed with the water dropped from his hair.

He stayed like that for long hours before changing his clothes and threw his back to his bed, still frustrated that he couldn’t make it on time to make Jun stay. He curled under his blanket, this was the worst birth day than what he already had before. It was almost dawn when he finally able to close his eyes.

***

The sun stabbed his eyes, ‘I am 32’ tiny voice in his head told him, but he still want to sleep more. He didn’t want to wake up and wait for another year to see Jun again. Perhaps it was better if he just destroy the sculpture, he should had do that since a long time ago. He slowly forced his eyes to open and realized the wooden Jun wasn’t there.

“Jun.”

He muttered to himself when he saw weirdness in his room, the mud track of his shoes was gone, only the clean floor remained and he heard something in his kitchen. No, it can’t be, he thought. He rose from the bed and walked out of his room, to find the most beautiful scene in his kitchen.

“Oha-you Miister Oh-no.”

Jun was standing there, with an apron and busily cooking something, just like what Ohno imagine. He only found one minor difference, the man in front of him was just too handsome than anyone could ever imagine and this guy should not be in the real world, but there he was, served your breakfast, the first breakfast in your 32 years old.

Ohno stepped to his kitchen and he was stunned, was this real or he still dreamed? This was a miracle to get the best birthday he could get for his entire life. He will never complain if he won’t get any present ever again afterwards.

“Jun.”

“Y-yes,” the taller answered, still with the weird pronunciation, but he quickly planned to train him to become completely a human.

He wanted to introduce him to all his friends, dragged him to drink and fishing. But for now, he watched Jun who still moved busily, cooking the food. But at least this man had given skill to cook without being trained, Ohno thought.

He spent the rest of his day to tell Jun about what he can do and can’t, including forbid him to call him Miiister.

“Just Satoshi, okay.”

Jun nodded and stammered, “Sa-tos-hi?”

“No, no, Sa-to-shi.” Ohno corrected him. He wanted to ask why Jun can be a real human but he cancelled it, it didn’t really matter now, not if the other man was here to accompany him, always.

With Jun by his side, Ohno never feel lonely anymore, knowing there’s someone who was waiting for him at home was really something he wanted these years. Jun’s ability to speak increased rapidly and Ohno proudly introduced him to his friends.

Nino punched his arm asked him if he can make another sculpture which look alike but Ohno said Jun was the one and only sculpture for him, there will be no other. He smiled warmly to the tall handsome man.

Sometimes, dreams do truly come true....
