Chapter 2
“Jun.”
It was early in the morning; the birds sing at the nearest trees, send the cozy feeling to the people who can hear them. The weak wind entered the room where Jun sleep and now was half-awaken when he heard Ohno’s voice on his ear, too soft yet it’s enough to wake him up.
“Satoshi, ohayou, you look so neat, where are you going?” Jun yawned, he glanced to the clock, 8 am in the morning, he turned his head to Ohno again. He looks so handsome with his glasses and the blue-motive tie on his neck, his fingers are now on Jun’s head, stroked it softly.
“I have important meeting today, perhaps I would be home late, don’t wait for me okay.”
Jun moved closer, he repaired the tie and smiled understandingly to the man in front of him.
“Be careful, I think I will walk around today, looking for the restaurant that you told me about,” Jun yawned again while rising from the bed. Ohno stood up, pecked his lips and the shorter walked towards the door. Jun watched him disappeared; he washed his face quickly and changed his pajamas into jeans and T-shirt. Ohno had prepared the breakfast for him, including the warm milk that he always drinks when he was pregnant and the habit continued even after his daughter born. He took it and drank it in a gulp, ignored the bread and get ready to walk out.
The weather seems perfect today, the eastern sky was so bright, the thin clouds decorate it. Jun took a deep breath, pedaling his bicycle slowly while spread his sight around. He paid attention more to the town this time. There is a building which looks so old, when he saw it properly, it’s a bookstore, the store was not open yet because it’s still too early. He also found a tennis field, same as the bookstore, there is no one there.
He reached the zebra cross and stopped when a group of children with an adult crossed the street. Jun just realized the adult was Aiba, the guy he met at the supermarket a few days before, he’s not in the mood to talk with that guy, hoped that Aiba forgot his face already. He distracted his head to the other direction in purpose, but turned it quickly when people screamed. He jumped from his bicycle in time, pushed one of the kids to the edge of the road, saved him from a crazy driver or whatever it was, since that guy rides the bike without hitting the brake, though a group of the children are crossing the street.
Jun felt his left elbow and palm crash the solid surface, he knows he got hurt, his right hand protect the kid who shivered from the head to toes.
“Nino!!”
He heard Aiba’s voice, a group of people surrounded them, including the other kids and also the curious pedestrians who wants to know what’s going on there.
“Nino, are you okay?” Aiba helped the kid stand up, he holds the kid warily and checked whether he is injured or not.
Jun stood up, he checked his elbow, the blood streamed down to his hand, but he’s glad that the kid was okay. He heard somebody is scolding the clumsy rider among the crowd and the memories that he actually don’t want to remember hit him all of sudden.
So that was the way Sora died? There’s nobody who cared to help her? When Jun arrived there, she was carried by the ambulance and he never believes that Sora was gone, never.
“Sir, are you alright.”
Jun confusedly looked around and found Aiba’s face next to him.
“You’re bleeding, we have to cure it, there is a small clinic over there,” Aiba pointed across the street, “I’ll meet you there after I take these kids to school,” he smiled encourage Jun who still pull his head to the reality and he just realized how hurt was his injured elbow.
“Thank you Sir.”
A small voice heard, the kid who he just had saved stepped closer to him, tilted up to Jun with the innocent face, seems that he already handled his shock from what happened just now.
“Are you okay?” Jun squatted and patted the kid’s head, that kid shyly searched in his dull bag, he found it and handed it to Jun’s palm, “Thanks for saving me.”
Jun glanced to it, an origami in crane form, he smiled to the kid, “Thank you, what’s your name boy?” he asked.
“Nino,” he answered in clear voice, paid attention to Jun’s face more than before.
“Thank you Nino, have a nice day in school,” Jun rise and straighten his body, “I’ll clean this wound at the clinic,” he told Aiba who nodded to him.
“Would you like to visit Sir?” Nino asked him again, the kid seems so interested in him, the innocent face makes Jun nodded, he just remembered that Aiba worked for an orphanage and this kid is one of them, he gulped, Nino looks brighter than the other kids, perhaps he wasn’t supposed to be there.
“Nino, this uncle must clean his wound and Nino must go to school, come on,” Aiba pulled Nino’s hand softly to him, the kid’s eyes still locked at Jun, “But he will visit us, Aiba-niichan?” he asked again.
“Yes, he will,” Aiba assured the kid, “Let’s go to school, we almost late.”
Jun followed them with his gaze, his eyes locked to Nino’s petite figure, he’s around 7 or 8 years old, Aiba might educated the kid so well, he was so polite when thanked Jun, he glanced to the origami in his hand, smiled to himself, he inserted it his pocket and took his bicycle with him, walked to the clinic that Aiba had told him before.
The only one doctor welcomed him with the sincere smile, his hair almost gone, but he looks strong, the figure that seems go outside many times, Jun can guess it from his tanned skin.
The doctor directly knows that he’s new in the town, perhaps he can remember every single face after working here for so long time, Jun thought. He just listens to what the doctor said half-hearted, and when he finished, Jun bowed to him, paid for the medicine and walked outside. He saw Aiba is outside; waiting for him, the tall man waved his hand and approached Jun.
“How’s your hand?” Aiba concerned to his left elbow, Jun swing it slowly to make sure that he’s okay.
“I just remember that I didn’t know your name yet,” Aiba once again gave his right hand to Jun who welcomed it instantly.
“Matsumoto Jun,” he said to the taller man.
“I want to thank you properly for saving Nino, I can’t imagine what will happen to that kid when the rider crush him.”
Jun pulled his mind away from Sora when Aiba mentioned what was happened, “Nino looks different from the other kid,” Jun commented, “How long has he been in the orphanage?”
“I don’t know for sure, my senior told me that he was found at the station near here, cold and he was sick,” Aiba said, he repaired his shirt while talking, “I think he was a lost kid or someone might throw him because of something, we never know,” the guy wiped his sweaty face with the small towel he carries with him, though the air wasn’t too hot, but he was sweating easily. Jun absorbed the story, what kind of parents who throw their kid away, more over a cute kid like Nino. He kept silent for a moment, glanced to his watch, almost 10, he didn’t find the restaurant yet, he managed to go there for lunch, wanted to try the menu there.
“Matsumoto san, please visit if you have time,” just like the first time they met, Aiba insisted Jun to visit the orphanage.
“Yes I will Aiba san, send my regard to Nino, hope I’ll see him soon.”
Jun bowed for the last time to Aiba and explained that he must go to the certain place, Aiba once again thanked him and waved his hand to Jun. Jun pedaling his bicycle further from the guy, the sun now bite his skin, but Jun didn’t feel it, his mind is full of Nino, he suddenly imagined the kid at the station, all alone, sick, cold and hungry. What kind of parents who let that happened? But then a small unwanted voice stabs his head, ‘what kind of parents who let their daughter died?’
Jun shook his head confusedly, he just realized that he is on the street that he never been before and there is no restaurant. He gulped, maybe he lost the way. He managed to check his Iphone, but there’s nothing in his pocket, he left it in the house, along with the charger. He cursed, hopelessly continued his morning trip with the hungry stomach, now he regretted that he ignored the bread.
A black car suddenly stopped near him, the back passenger seat opened, Jun saw a man with the sunglasses stared at him, he took off his sunglasses and ask, “Excuse me, do you know where Hanabi school is?”
“Eee??” Jun thinks that he must be look so stupid now, “I am new here, sorry.”
There is nobody else around him, he glanced to the man once again, seems that he is the important person from the way he dressed.
“Thank you,” the man smiled to Jun who replied with the weak grin, “My iphone is not working here, there is no signal,” that man shook his head and returned his attention to Jun once again.
“Have a nice day,” he patted his driver’s shoulder and the car continued to run, bring its passengers to the place that they didn’t know where exactly it was located, just like Jun who still can’t find the restaurant, so he decided to come back home, perhaps he still have time to buy something for lunch. He turned his bicycle and took the same route to go home.
***
Jun was still reading the book when Ohno returned home, looked so tired and a little bit messy, Jun welcomed him with his usual smile, asked whether Ohno need to eat something because Jun already had his dinner before, but Ohno shook his head, said that his office provided the big dinner after the meeting.
The wound on his elbow gained Ohno’s attention, Jun assured that he’s okay and the wound is not even bigger than a thin line. He explained that he saved an orphan who crossed the street, how a clumsy rider almost crash the little kid, Jun stopped many times when he told Ohno the story, his partner took deep breath few times, seems want to say something about the accident, but Jun only got few words from him.
“I am glad that you’re okay.”
ldquo;Satoshi, I am interested in that kid, his name is Nino, maybe we can visit the orphanage if you have time,” Jun put his book on the table, he watched Ohno’s face which formed a cute smile and he nodded.
“Sure, by the way I found the new office on my way, seems there’s a lawyer who opened it here.” Ohno loosened his tie, they walked to the bedroom, Ohno turned to him and ask, “Did you find the restaurant?”
Jun shook his head shyly, he told Ohno that he couldn’t find the restaurant because he was too stupid that he left his iphone at home, he lost the way and met a strange man who asked the school called Hanabi.
“A lawyer?” Jun asked, he remembered the man in that suit, perhaps he was the lawyer who opened the new office in this town.
“I’m not sure, I didn’t pay attention that much,” Ohno said while getting ready for bathe, Jun waited on the bed meanwhile Ohno took his bath, his mind full of today’s happening.
He remembered how Nino shivered in his arms, how he thanked Jun by giving him a small origami, Aiba’s story about the kid who was abandoned, and then a strange man with his sunglasses and a smile on his lips. He changed into his pajamas, curled under his blanket, waiting for Ohno to join him, he wanted to ask something to Ohno, but before he can do that, he already dozed off.
Ohno took him on the ride the next day, including visiting Ohno’s aunt, something that Jun actually hate, because she always talk about Sora and the accident, and how stupid Jun is for being Ohno’s partner. Jun had trained himself not to answer a single word when they visit her house, he had asked Ohno to stop visit her, but Ohno said it would be rude, since his aunt helped his mother to raise him, so Jun asked Ohno not to take him there for the rest of his life, but Ohno is too positive thinking that Jun can be good friend with his aunt one day. Jun only can bite his lower lip to prevent himself from giving the rude answer.
“So what do you do now Jun? After resigning from the restaurant? I bet you just stay at home and didn’t do anything,” she commented after preparing some tea for him and Ohno. Jun glanced to Ohno first, he thinks twice before finally answered, “I’m still looking for another job.”
ldquo;Or maybe you’re too lazy to work, leave everything to Satoshi.”
Jun couldn’t answer directly, he faced down the floor and heard Ohno’s voice beside him, “I told him to relax and find something that he wants to do, but not in hurry, right Jun?”
Jun nodded, he wished he were at home or elsewhere, but not here, at the place he hates the most.
“Don’t you want another kid Satoshi? You must be lonely after Sora died,” Ohno’s aunt commented again, this time Jun didn’t care that he was too rude or whatever, he stood up.
“Thanks for the tea,” Jun ran outside, to the car, flopped his head to the chair and can’t hold himself anymore, he cried. The words still cling to his ears, what that old hag knows about being lonely? Who is the loneliest person after losing Sora? It’s him, and he can’t stand if somebody else talks about Sora that light, like it wasn’t a big problem, as if losing a daughter is the normal thing, that you can replace her easily by other child. It’s too cruel for Jun.
Ohno arrived at the car, Jun distracted his wet face from Ohno, he doesn’t want to talk about it now. Ohno seems understand and can read his mind, because he drove back home in silence. When finally they are inside their house, Jun heard Ohno mumbled the words, that he hardly believes.
“Jun, how about adopting a child?”
