Summary: Jun was an interior designer for Remarkable Design Graphic Company, his life had been simple until he met Ohno – a perfectionist client who was very difficult to deal with. On the other hand, Jun eventually found out that  Ohno was also a loving dad to his only son…

The three of them fell into an odd silence as they were inside the cab which brought them towards Ohno’s house. Jun was torn between his professionalism to finish the work and the urge to punch Ohno right on his nose. He sat at the front seat, pretending to read the contract in the folder he was carrying, he glanced at Kazu’s pale face through the rearview mirror; the boy was half-asleep, still weak from the anesthesia he got for the surgery on his left arm.

He knew it wasn’t the right time to talk with the hard-headed and self-centered Ohno, het let the guy accuse him as Kazu’s older boyfriend and accepted the angry glare from the man from now and then.

“I’m his boyfriend, so I have to accompany him,” he said to Ohno who was still busy chanting about cradle snatcher’s doing and what kind of thing he would do if he could prove that Jun had done something improper to his son.

“Dad,” Kazu whispered weakly from the wheelchair, “please let Jun san come.”

Ohno glared at Jun and spoke without even opening his mouth, “Alright.”

They ended up in a taxi without exchanging any words.

Jun had never guessed that Ohno was Kazu’s father, it was the last thing he expected from the man. Sho had mentioned that Ohno was a perfectionist, but the man he met was more than that, he was a complainer who tried to find someone’s mistake on purpose. He made Jun look like a trainee, a damn stupid trainee. He would ask Sho to pull him out from this project as soon as he could because he was sick of Ohno already, sick of his behavior.

The taxi stopped as they reached Ohno’s house. Jun helped Kazu to sit on his wheelchair and repaired the boy’s blanket. Kazu gave him a soft smile and whispered thank you.

“We can sign our contract and you may leave,” Ohno said while opening the front door.

“Understood,” Jun answered shortly.

“Jun san,” Kazu called him as his Dad disappeared to prepare Kazu’s room, “sorry about my Dad.”

“It’s okay,” Jun squatted and smiled at the teenager, “it must be hurt.”

Kazu nodded weakly, “I don’t want to go back to school.”

“But you have to.”

“That place is hell,” the boy said with unreadable expression. “My Dad never listen to me about what I’m facing at school, he said that I’m too weak.”

Jun refrained himself to say something awful about Ohno as he heard what the boy said, he pushed Kazu’s wheelchair inside and found Ohno who was busily picking dirty clothes from his sofa.

“Kazu, what do you want to eat for lunch? I can order something,” Ohno said, looking confused and unfocused and for the first time Jun saw him as an ordinary father of a teenager.

“I have no appetite,” Kazu answered.

Ohno glanced at Jun and was surprised, “Why are you still here?”

“Well, we haven’t signed our contract yet,” Jun shrugged.

“You will leave?” Kazu asked desperately.

“Enough with the lovely dovey,” Ohno cut, he approached Jun and looked into his eyes. “Leave my son alone.”

“Dad, please,” Kazu whined, “Jun san is my friend, he helped me with the photograph and he’s really good in it, stop accusing him with negative things because you’re the one with such narrow minded and never listen to others.”

If they were in a better situation, Jun would have laughed by seeing Ohno’s expression, but he kept his face neutral.

“Let him stay,” Kazu said, glaring at his Dad.

Ohno massaged his temple, Jun could sense that he was torn between the urge to keep his son comfort and the dislike towards Jun which was clearly shown on his face.

“I’ll stay until he falls asleep,” Jun said, turning at Ohno, “I need to borrow your computer for the time being. You want to me to complete the design as soon as I can, don’t you?”

Kazu touched his hand lightly and asked him to take him to his bedroom.

“My computer, please,” Jun said as he pushed Kazu’s wheelchair towards the bedroom.

Kazu’s room was a typical teenage boy’s room, a poster of his favorite baseball team decorated the wall beside a book shelf which was full of comics and magazines. The studying desk by the window was in a terrible mess, a few instant cup noodles lied innocently along with empty bottles of mineral water. Kazu’s dirty clothes piled up onanother corner, mixed up with a half-opened rucksack. Jun bet that Ohno rarely entered this room or maybe Kazu was the one who drove him away every time the man tried to get nearer.

Jun helped the boy climbed to his bed and covered him with the blanket.

“My arm hurts,” he said.

“You will need some pain killer, but not until we have lunch, do you want to eat something in particular?” Jun asked.

“My Dad said that he would order something,” the boy murmured.

“I’ll cook something for you, it’s better than eating lunch from the fast food restaurant, don’t you think?”

Kazu nodded.

Jun stood up and walked outside of the room, he found Ohno at the living room, preparing a laptop for Jun.

“May I borrow your kitchen?” he asked the man.

Ohno looked at him with such a confusing gaze. It seemed that the man had decided to give up with their current situation, with a kid to take care of, it would be unwise to keep on arguing. Ohno rolled up his sleeves while guiding Jun towards his kitchen.

“I don’t cook that much, I only have a little ingredient,” the man mumbled from the corner of his mouth.

“It’s enough for Kazu kun’s portion,” Jun followed him and peered over to Ohno’s fridge.

It was his first time to be this close with Ohno, the man looked older than usual and he seemed tired. There were bags under his eyes as the sign that he was lack of sleep. The wrinkles on his face could be seen clearly, he seemed to have many things to think about more than what he could handle.

He wondered what kind of life Ohno had been leading up until now, raising a son all alone wasn’t an easy job to do. Jun could conclude that Ohno and Kazu’s relationship wasn’t going well, the way they talked was heard like strangers. Jun wasn’t an expert in dad-son relationship because he had no experience in facing children of his own, but it seemed that Kazu was lack of attention and lack of friends. He didn’t know why he was so concern about Kazu, he had no responsibility to the kid, but his instinct told him to safe the boy before something worse happened.

“Your refrigerator is awful,” Jun commented.

“Thanks,” Ohno answered coldly.

“I’ll make some curry for Kazu kun and order something for us later on.”

“Us?” Ohno confirmed.

“Well, if you don’t need lunch, I can order for myself, as simple as that,” Jun shrugged.

“Whatever,” Ohno said, looking into his eyes with an unreadable expression, “thank you for taking care of Kazu. I think he likes you more than me.”

“I’m his boyfriend, remember?” Jun said while starting the preparation to make the curry.

“You don’t mean it, don’t you?” Ohno asked in worrisome.

“Of course, I don’t mean it, what kind of guy do you think I am?” Jun shook his head in disbelief.

Ohno scratched his head and left him towards the dining table, the man slumped at the chair and buried his face into his palms, thinking. Maybe Ohno wasn’t as bad as he thought, maybe he was too observed into his job that he forgot how to raise his only son. However, it wasn’t enough to erase Jun’s anger; Ohno wanted him to redo the finished design along with endless criticism. He was an asshole after all, Jun thought in agony.

He finished the curry and brought it to Kazu’s room; the kid was reading something when he entered. He flashed a broad smile at Jun as he approached his bed.

“Thank you, Jun san,” he said.

“You’re welcome,” Jun put down the tray on the side table and helped Kazu to sit down. “Let me feed you.”

Kazu nodded.

“It’s been a while since I ate a proper lunch,” the teenager mumbled.

“I can see that,” Jun said, looking at the piles of cup noodles on Kazu’s studying desk. “You have to eat good food during your growing period.”

“I know, I’m studying that subject right now,” Kazu answered.

They kept on talking until all of the curry rice had gone. Kazu yawned and told Jun that he would take a nap for a while. Jun helped him lie down and adjusted the blanket; he left the room and looked at Kazu’s sleeping face once again before closing the door behind him.

He found Ohno at the dining table, busily typing something on his laptop. Jun put the tray and the dishes on the sink and joined Ohno at the table.

“I’ve ordered pizza for us,” he mumbled.

“Thanks,” Jun said. “I’ll finish the design today so we can sign the contract,” he continued.

Ohno stopped typing and looked at him, “Okay.”

It felt weird to work beside Ohno who was ready to critic Jun on every detail, but it seemed that he was too exhausted today because he said nothing. He stole glances every now and then towards Jun, but no words came from his mouth. It was almost five in the evening when they finally finished; Ohno signed the contract and thanked Jun for all his effort and thanked him for taking care of Kazu.

The boy was still fast asleep when Jun left. Ohno thanked him once again and walked him towards the nearest bus stop, ignoring Jun’s protest that he was capable enough to find the bus stop by himself.

“Kazu was a sweet kid, but he changed once he entered junior high,” Ohno told him all of a sudden. “He got bruises all over his body, but he didn’t want to talk about it with me. I thought he was beaten by some hungry cradle snatcher and you were the first on my list.”

“Wait, why me?” Jun asked, remembering Ohno’s angry expression when he told Jun to stay away from his son.

“I found your picture on Kazu’s phone, I couldn’t find any connection between the both of you, beside that you are a guy who befriend Kazu for benefit.”

Jun shook his head but smiled at the same time for hearing the protective tone on Ohno’s voice.

“That boy needs help, I personally think that he is a victim of bullying,” Jun said seriously. “He told me that he got no friends and he didn’t want to go to school anymore.”

“What should I do?” Ohno asked in agony, “I don’t think we can do something about the bullying at school.”

“I’ll find a way,” Jun said and he was surprised because he had decided not to meet Ohno anymore if he could.

 ***

Jun found Sho in his office room the next day with the piles of documents on his desk. He lifted his head as Jun entered but soon returned his attention to the files before him.

“I heard that Ohno san finally signed the contract,” Sho said.

Jun took a seat across Sho’s table while handing the signed contract to the man, “His son got an accident and I think he was confused enough that he didn’t want to prolong the process.”

“Accident?”

“It seems that his teammates bumped him on purpose,” Jun shrugged.

“Sorry to hear that,” Sho shook his head. “So, I have granted your request, you will be no longer responsible for this project.”

Jun had forgotten that he requested to be pulled away from Ohno’s project; Kazu’s accident had wiped that decision away.

“Wait, did I request it?”

“Yes,” Sho nodded. “You endlessly complained about Ohno san, so it’s better for me to pull you out before you commit suicide,” Sho said as if it was a joke

Jun didn’t respond to what Sho said, he had forgotten what he wanted to say.He left Sho’s office, feeling so confused. It was too late for Sho to take back his decision because he had given Jun’s profile to their client. Besides, he didn’t want Sho to label him as a trouble maker.

He thought of Kazu, that kid sent him a message this morning, telling him that his breakfast was horrible because his dad made a super burnt toast bread, he ended up eating one of his cup noodle as an emergency. Jun couldn’t figure it out why Ohno was such an incapable guy, despite that he was a perfectionist on his work, but he was definitely not an ideal family-guy. He pitied Kazu for having such dad.

Jun san, would you come again?

Jun hadn’t replied to Kazu’s message since it would be improver to visit the kid without Ohno’s approval. That man probably believed that Jun wasn’t a cradle snatcher like he accused, but there was something which made Jun reluctant. He couldn’t name it, he was afraid that unnamed thing would drag him into Ohno if he met him on a regular basis.

His new client happened to be someone Jun had already known. Ikuta Toma from Starlight construction, he was a good client,  unlike Ohno who seemed to not satisfy with everything Jun designed. However, Jun’s stomach clenched unpleasantly when he realized that he would not meet Ohno anymore on professional basis.

Wait, Jun thought, who wants to work with that selfish hard-headed monster?

He sent an email to Toma as he read the design request and arranged the meeting schedule, he then sent another email to Okada, explaining that he wasn’t involved in Ohno’s project anymore. He glanced at his watch, it was close to lunch time, he was about to leave the office when someone entered and approached him.

“Excuse me, is Sho chan here?”

Jun looked at the man; he was Aiba Masaki, the guy whom Sho introduced to him, the one he should supervise, but Sho had cancelled it in the last minute because Jun was already too occupied with another project.. He wore lousy trousers below his super colorful shirt, his rounded eyeglasses were the worst thing Jun had ever seen. The man smiled at him – too broad for business-purpose-smile. Jun was sure that he wasn’t here for business, what kind of subordinate would call Sho as ‘Sho chan?’

“Sho is in his office,” Jun replied, turning his gaze to his computer. “You can call him if you’re in a hurry,” he continued.

“Alright, thank you, Matsumoto san,” the guy answered.

He was a kind of jealous towards this Aiba Masaki, he wished Sho could treat him like this man, but maybe there was something more between the two men – something which better off unknown.

Jun rose off his chair and walked out of his office room as the clock pointed to 12 in the afternoon. He headed towards the elevator, feeling annoyed all of a sudden by Aiba’s appearance. He wished he was the one being appointed for the branch office in Osaka since Aiba was still a trainee and was not capable enough to handle big projects, but it seemed that Sho had another consideration to let Jun work at the head quarter and pointed Aiba instead.

He walked across the street towards the ramen restaurant, choosing a seat at far corner after mentioning his order. He realized that he was facing an emotional problem recently; since his encounter with Ohno. He hated that man, to be precise, but it wasn’t an ordinary dislike. The feeling for Ohno was kind of different – Jun wanted to know more about the man despite of his dislike.

Did he miss Ohno after what happened yesterday?

He saw a glimpse of joy inside Ohno’s eyes when Jun told him that he wasn’t a cradle snatcher. He couldn’t guess what it was, but aside from his selfishness, Jun was sure that Ohno was a kind-hearted man.

Why do I need to think about him? Jun thought recklessly.

He finished his lunch and returned to his office immediately. Aiba was still in Sho’s office room when Jun returned, he could hear their conversation including Aiba’s endless giggling which made him sick to his stomach.

It was obvious that he couldn’t concentrate, so he brought his laptop outside of the office towards the nearest park. However, no idea popped up, no matter how hard he tried. He gave up and leaned his head on the park bench, let the autumn sunlight bath him.

“Jun san! Dad, it’s him, let’s go there!”

Jun turned towards the source of the voice and saw Ohno, pushing Kazu’s wheelchair towards the bench where he was sitting. He blinked a few times to make sure that he didn’t imagine things because he was too tired from work. Was it a pure coincidence that Ohno was here? But he put that aside as he saw Kazu’s bright face.

“Kazu kun, hi!” Jun smiled at the teenager.

“It’s so boring like hell in the house,” Kazu complained.

“The doctor said that you need at least three days’ rest,” Ohno mumbled, glancing at Jun. He was still on his office attire; his sleeves were rolled up to his elbows which showed his veined arms.

Jun stood up from his seat and approached both of them, he inserted his laptop into his tote bag and shouldered it. Kazu’s smile was very bright as he saw him.

“Let me,” Jun pushed Kazu’s wheelchair instead and let Ohno follow behind them. “So, did you have your lunch?”

“Yes, dad ordered a delivery meal.”

“I’m sorry about your breakfast,” Jun said.

Kazu chuckled as he heard it, “You should have stayed, Jun san.”

Ohno coughed behind them, but when Jun turned at him, the man averted his gaze away.

“If you insist, then I have no choice,” he said.

“Really?”

“Of course, not,” Ohno answered from behind, he stepped to the front of his son and looked at Jun. “What I’ve told you, don’t put a burden on Matsumoto san.”

Kazu pouted and chose not to answer to his dad’s statement.

“It’s not a burden, really. I’ll be glad to help Kazu kun.”

“No, it’s not that,” Ohno messaged his own temple and looked everywhere but Jun.

Jun could see how Ohno’s face reddened slightly and it made him somehow embarrassed.

“Let’s buy some ice cream,” he said to Kazu, pushing his wheelchair away from Ohno.

Somehow, Kazu’s appearance had erased some of his issues, including the bitter feeling he felt when he saw Aiba Masaki around. Maybe he should keep his promise to stay at Ohno’s house for the sake of Kazu or maybe there would another purpose.

I feel warm about the thought that Jun is showing
affections towards Kazu. I mean the kid needs some
love you know and at least he can still feel that
someone is willing to care for him. Of course, Ohno
does care for him but it seems he's having a hard time
with himself and he probably has so many things to think
about that is why he's too tired to manage his feelings
appropriately. I feel bad for Ohno and I'm glad that Jun
feels some sympathy for him despite his hatred towards him
and something unusual (whistles suggestively).
I think it's a big slap on Ohno's face as a father that
his son is grateful towards someone else instead of him. Nevertheless, it's freaking exciting that Jun is given a reason to still see Ohno even though he was removed from the project. Wahhaahhah! It's good for Kazu and maybe he's planning something else that can make his father realize things and maybe...see a new love!
Yaaaaaaaaay! Thank you so much for the update girls! <3

Yay, update!
I think after his really awful behaviour towards Jun and now that he knows the truth, Ohno really feels embarrassed. I wonder if he already is interested in Jun, but I'm sure he has to feel like an idiot for how he behaved >< I mean, his son gets bullied and is desperate, and a stranger helps said son. Then he blames the stranger for everything and makes him suffer at work out of revenge, just to realize he was completely off with his assumptions. Oh, Ohno... he has to learn a lot. At the moment his father qualities are pretty bad, his friendship ones too... no wonder he feels depressed. He really needs some help (maybe Jun can help him <3)
I wonder if Ohno will be sad when he hears that Jun retreated from the project. I guess for Jun's sanity it really was better (I think by now he knows Ohno wanted to make him suffer...) - maybe it's better for them to start interacting on a private level instead? <3

Thanks for this update!

I have a good cackle when Jun played along, telling Ohno that he is Kazu's boyfriend. Ohno's angry face must be funny and Jun found satisfaction in it (sasuga DoS haha)
Ohno really need help in handling Kazu. Kazu is having a hard teenage life. When he's rejecting his father it seems that Jun's presence is really important to lift his spirit.
I'm loving this story and I'm looking forward to the next chapter already
Thanks Yun-chan and Eiko-chan!
