POULTRY FARM

“I love to work in a poultry farm.” Jun said enthusiastically to his friend, Aiba, who worked in a stable next to the poultry. They were employed by the same owner, but in Jun’s case, he was asked to work there by the head of this poultry and he didn’t yet to know what kind of person who owned this large land along with the poultry and stable within it. Hell, he didn’t want to know about him either, he just love to see the chickens crowed when he appeared to feed them or to take the eggs.

“Glad if you like it.” Aiba patted his shoulder. Jun knew this guy after two weeks works. This guy appeared all of sudden in front of him and announced his name without being asked. But his bright smile told Jun that Aiba was a very nice guy.

“Ohno san would visit next week, he rides horse twice a month.” Aiba explained while putting off his gloves and stared away to the horses busily nibbling the grass at the farm, “Maybe you want to introduce yourself as a new employee here.” Aiba continued.

Jun smoothed his T-shirt which was wet by the sweat and answered, “Am I that important? He had hundreds employees, there’s no need to introduce myself.” he chuckled lightly to Aiba. The man just nodded, confused with his own suggestion.

“Maybe you’re right, it’s time for me to bath the horses, see you Jun.”

“See you.”

Jun waved his hand when Aiba stepped further from him. He continued his job to pick the eggs, collect them at certain place and ready to feed the chickens for the last time that day. He faced his days with the same routine and he didn’t remember it was the day that Aiba said the owner would visit the farm to ride the horse.

He managed to clean the chicken plate that afternoon, brought all the equipment and placed them in a small cart, pushed it to the nearest river. He hummed all the way while took deep breath few times. The sun shined so bright, make his steps lighter and he arrived at the river, squatted and started his work.

He didn’t expect a horse would run towards him with the noisy rider on its back. The guy looks like a cowboy but in the wrong way when he can’t control his own riding. Jun jumped to the edge just in time to avoid the worst thing might happen to him. The horse step on the plastic plate, break them into pieces and finally drop the rider to the water with the sound which assured Jun it was very hurt.

Jun still cached his breath after seeing what happened. He looked at the man who still lay in the water, winced and held his knees but the guy looked up until their eyes met. The falling rider stared at him in the way that make Jun blushed all of sudden. A wide hat still hide half of his face, but Jun can see the perfect lips and sharp well-shape nose on that face and now the lips formed wincing expression while glaring at Jun continuously. Jun knew he should help instead of just staring like idiot, but before he could do anything, Aiba was already arrived with his own horse. He jumped quickly and ran into the water.

“Ohno-san, are you okay? Anything hurt?” Aiba asked frantically, his eyes travelled along the other’s body, seems so panic and worried.

Jun swallowed, so this is Ohno, the legendary rich man? He didn’t know that Ohno was still young, perhaps he was only few years older than Jun. He thought Ohno was an old man, who loved to play golf in his spare time, but the man who fell down from the horse was the opposite, totally. Out of his senses he praised Ohno inside his mind, that man was handsome and very cute.

“The horse acted so strange since I ride it.” Ohno still held his knees painfully.

“I’ll contact Nino, he can bring the car here, so you don’t need to walk any further” Aiba withdrew his phone from his pocket. Meanwhile Jun didn’t know what to do, half hidden by the bushes at the edge of the river, he watched Aiba who spoke to a person named Nino on his phone, when he finished he just realized Jun was there.

“A, Jun, you’re here, the horse broke all of the plates huh.” Aiba speak lightly, as if it’s only a minor trouble, “You need to buy the new one.”

Jun stepped slowly to the empty cart, bowed shortly to Ohno and planned to return to the poultry quickly.

“Ohno-san, he is Jun, the new man in the poultry, he works for almost a month.” AIba dragged him to Ohno who rose of from the water slowly, stared sharply in the same way to Jun who bowed again.

“My name is Jun, nice to work for you Ohno-san.” Jun spoke as polite as he could to the shorter man before him. It was weird enough to introduce himself especially in this kind of awkward moment, but the boss forced a smile on his lips and about to answer when…

“Ohno-san!” a new man appeared from the car, carried the first aid box along with new clothes. He ran fast to them and panted, “Let’s bandage your knee and go to the nearest clinic.”

Ohno didn’t turn his head to the new comer, his eyes still wandered to Jun’s face, the later glanced at Aiba for help, when finally Ohno spoke.

“Nino, help him to pack his things, he’ll come with me.”

All of the men except Ohno got a confused expression, especially Jun who didn’t understood what happened, who will come with who?

“But your knee, Ohno-san.” Nino still stood by the edge of the river. His face showed the same puzzling look like Jun himself.

“I’ll take care of it.” Ohno stepped out of the water. Aiba helped him but Ohno ignored his hands, “Be ready in thirty minutes, I already told Sho that we’ll be home before dinner.” Ohno ordered Nino to go, Jun managed to slowly disappear from there when he found his hand was gripped by the man called Nino.

“Come on, be quick, we only have thirty minutes.”

“What? But? Wait, what happened?”

Jun tried to get an explanation but Nino seemed didn’t want to give any. He just kept telling Jun to get ready, but where? What for? He was clueless.

“Wait, errr Nino-san, I still have many works to do, I can’t go.” Jun stammered when they stepped to his room which located few meters away from the poultry.

“Who cares with that, as long as Ohno san wants you to come.” Nino said shortly, “Pack your clothes, errr don’t ask any question because I can’t give you the answer either.” Nino continued coldly.

Jun did as what Nino said to him, packed his clothes to the small bag. He only brought two pairs of T-shirt, because he might only needed to stay for two days in Ohno’s place that he didn’t know at all. Nino paid attention to him from the door frame, crossed his arms in front of his chest while wondered his sight to all of the room. His face formed a mocking expression but Jun ignored that. He carried the bag to his shoulder and stepped to Nino again.

“I’m ready.” he said.

“Good.”

The shorter lead his way back to Ohno who waited in the car. He already changed his wet clothes and the bandage neatly wrapped his right knee. He still busy with the phone in his when Jun and Nino arrived.

“Ohno-san, we’re ready to go.” Nino announced. He took the medicine box from the ground and placed it at the front seat. Ohno turned his head from his phone but not to Nino, he stared at Jun who doesn’t understand the situation instead.

“Sit here, Jun.” the man pointed at the seat beside him. Jun glanced to Nino, hoping for an explanation, but Nino looked to other direction in purpose. Jun doubtfully took the seat beside Ohno. His boss gave him another look that makes Jun totally awkward, he almost asked a question, but Ohno’s voice canceled his intention.

“We’ll go to my castle, that place suits you better than this poultry.” Ohno showed his front teeth in a wide smile to Jun who just kept silent. He just nodded, maybe that’s the best thing he can do right now.

The car left the poultry, rolled further towards the city. Jun moved awkwardly along the way, he thought Ohno would never let him go back to the poultry again based on what he said before that Jun didn’t suit the poultry. He hoped Ohno’s castle was really a better place, not the opposite.

Finally they arrived at the huge building, Jun tilted up to admire how high the castle was. The front yard where the car stopped was as big as the poultry where he worked. Many windows decorated the building and Jun could see a little bit of the inside part. He gulped, since he never been to this kind of place. But he still wished there was a river now, he wanted to finish cleaning all the plates.

Nino opened the car door for Ohno and when he stepped his feet to the ground, another man with the very good suit came from the front door. Jun found an amusing scene, because Nino looked sharply with a sparkling face to the new comer and the man in suit looked at Ohno with the same way. No matter how stupid and inexperienced he was, Jun can tell that they share one-sided love, Nino to the suit man and the suit man to Ohno. Jun followed Ohno out and he hoped he never involve in this kind of bizarre love circle in this castle.

“Ohno-san okaeri nasai.” the suit man bowed and when he found Ohno’s knee wrapped by the bandage, his face changed into worry expression, “Ohno-san, your knee.”

“It’s okay Sho, I am fine.” Ohno waved his hand to show that the injury wasn’t really bad. That’s when the man named Sho realized Jun’s presence. His eyes stabbed Jun in questioning gaze and a dislike towards him.

“Oh, this is Jun, he would be one of the chef in the kitchen, I count on you to guide him Sho.” Ohno patted Sho’s shoulder without aware of the man’s expression who saw Jun with the dangerous gaze.

Jun faced down, a chef? Ohno was definitely insane. He can’t cook at all and now he must be under this fierce man guidance? Jun thought the fastest plan to escape.

“Dinner is ready Ohno-san.” the man guided them towards the castle. He walked right beside Ohno to show how important he was to them. Jun glanced at Nino, he couldn’t hold himself from asking.

“Who is that man Nino-san?” Jun whispered as softly as he can so the two men in front of him couldn’t hear him.

“Sakurai Sho, the head-butler in this castle, and I am in love with him and ready to be his lover, so you don’t get any chance to lay your eyes on him, okay.” Nino pointed his first finger to Jun’s chest who nodded instantly.

He didn’t asked anymore question to the shorter man, just watched the other two who walked in front of him. Nino seemed so positive about Sho who clearly ignored him and if only Nino was his friend, he would scream to him that Sho likes Ohno instead of him. He felt that they walk forever to reach the main hall where a big table was waiting, too big to be enjoyed alone.

Sho pulled the chair for Ohno, meanwhile Jun waited for the next command about what he should do.

“Nino, take him to the servant room.” The one who gave an order was Sho.

Nino pouted and turned his back around. But before Jun could step to follow him, Ohno’s voice heard from the table.

“No, I want him to join me here, errr Nino too.” Ohno coughed and gave them a code to join them at the table. Jun froze at his place until he found his hand was dragged by Nino to the dining table.

***

“As expected you’re just a stupid village man.”

Sho’s voice heard at the whole kitchen and Jun found all of the other servants look at him with the same mocking gaze. He wanted to answer and said that he never expect to be here in a loud voice, but he couldn’t do that. Behind his glasses,  Sho’s eyes was enough to make him shut his mouth.

He never experienced to cook in a big kitchen with the equipment that he didn’t even know how to call it. At his first day, he broke a plate that looked so expensive and it was enough to gain anger from Sho who told him that his kitchen didn’t need a disturber like him. So, a week later he found himself as the cleaning man.

Ohno asked him to clean his room, though there was no need to clean it anymore. Jun knew Ohno only want to keep him near. Something that he didn’t really hate or maybe he enjoyed it. But he tried not to show his delighted face to anyone or they will get suspicious about him liking Ohno and got some trouble with Sho who clearly reminded him about where he came from every time they meet at the corridor.

For almost two weeks, Ohno kept him to clean his room which consisted of three large different rooms and showed him around. There was one room in where Ohno makes a graffiti painting on his wall and Jun only listened quietly to the explanation while watched Ohno’s lips movement. Maybe those lips were the reason why Sho liked Ohno and he just afraid that the same thing would happen to him, or it even had happened.

“Jun, look at this, I made a caricature, maybe you want to see it.” Ohno took his hand and drag him closer to his laptop when Jun cleaned the window at the other day. He leaned his head closer to Ohno’s laptop and their foreheads almost touch each other.

He forgot that he hated the castle, forgot that Ohno wasn’t a person for him, a village guy and now a servant. He should tell Ohno that he wanted to return to the poultry and now seemed to be the perfect time since they were alone. But he couldn’t do that. He couldn’t see this cute face again if he returned.

“Ohno-san, this is the colored-pencils you want me to buy…..

Sho appeared at the door, holding a big box in his hand. His face changed into a dark frowning when he saw Ohno’s hand on Jun’s. Jun pulled his fingers all of sudden and bowed shortly, darted to the door under Sho’s death glare.

***

“Don’t get any closer to him, understand me?” Sho pushed him to the wall and put his hand on the right and left of his head.

“He’s the one who asked me to clean the room, it was not what I want.” Jun tried to explain when Sho kept glaring at him.

“I’ll make sure you will be far away from him.”

The head butler disappeared through the door, left Jun with his own minds. Who wanted to take Ohno from him? Ohno was the one who dragged him here, separated him from the quite poultry that he loved. He missed the chicken, the horses, even Aiba’s kind smile.

Here, he only got scolded, death glare, and mocking gaze from everyone, but Ohno’s grip just now? What was that? Jun only saw Ohno as a selfish man before tonight, dragged him here without his agreement, but he was the one who protected him from those feeling. That was why Jun always fail to say his purpose in leaving this castle.

He was moved to the other part, which was arranged by Sho. His task now was to take care of the grass at the back yard, a place where Ohno would never come by, just like what Sho wanted. He cut the grass half-heartedly. It had been a week since he moved here and already decided that he will return to the poultry. He would tell Sho when they met, but there was no one he met during this seven days, not even Nino, who usually walk around the castle to follow Sho if he didn’t have any task from Ohno.

He straighten his back, this yard is too large to be finished alone. Sho must do this on purpose, to punish him for flirting with Ohno as the butler selfishly said. But Jun refused to admit his defeat. He even didn’t stop his hand from working when the rain started to fall. He must finish all of it, like what Sho said to him and show that guy, he didn’t afraid of him.

“You’d better stop before catch any cold.”

Jun tilted up to see Nino is standing there, holding a huge umbrella to protect their head from rain, “I give up.”

“Give up?” Jun stood up, he stopped his work and joined Nino to walk to the building.

“Sho.” The shorter answered, “He never lat me to get closer and I just realized he’s in love with Ohno-san.”

“I can tell that from the first time I saw him.” Jun said, he looked hopelessly at the grass that he didn’t finish yet.

“Seems they love each other.”

“W-what?” Jun tried to cough a bit to hide his stammering voice.

“A boss and his butler, why not an assistant and a butler.” Nino seemed didn’t pay attention to what Jun said, so he can take deep breath in relieve.

“So, Sho-san finally made up with Ohno-san?” he asked, pretended not to feel too interested for it. Even though he guess Ohno liked him since the very first time they met but the boss never gave him more clue than gripping his hand more than two weeks ago.

“I am not sure, but Sho san never lays his eyes on me.” Nino pouted. He looked at the grass with the hopeless gaze too but with different reason.

“I hope they wouldn’t get along like what you said.” Jun murmured. For some reason he wanted to get revenge for all Sho had done to him, by taking Ohno with him.  But considering his condition, he couldn’t do it right now.

“Jun, do you like Ohno-san?” Nino asked all of sudden, made Jun paused his steps and the rain wetting his head.

“Ohno-san?” he mumbled. Like? Maybe he liked his boss like what Nino said, but since when? Since he saw Ohno fell down from the horse? Or since the cleaning session where he could pay attention to Ohno secretly, he couldn’t tell.

“You like him, don’t you?” Nino tried to ask him again.

“I don’t know, perhaps it’s better for me to stay at the poultry, that place suit me more than this castle.” Jun looked at the high building in front of them, where Ohno spend his days, maybe with Sho, enjoyed the dinner together or played chess.

***

Jun dared himself to talk with Sho that he wanted to return to the poultry. The head butler just smiled in a weird way and nodded without any more thought.

“I’ll report it to Ohno-san, a village boy like you is better to return to your original place.” he said. Jun tried his best to keep smile and replied.

“Good luck for you and Ohno-san.” he added bitterly.

He felt dumb that he had a feeling for Ohno, even just a bit. Maybe it’s better for him to look for a job in another poultry which was not belong to Ohno. He thanked Sho and returned to his room. It had been two months since he arrived here after witnessing the river-horse incident and saw Ohno for the first time.

Jun prepared his bag and stuffed his clothes which were just two pairs of T-shirts in. Tomorrow he would take the morning bus to return to his village. He decided to look for another job after this, but when he stepped out from the room, he found Ohno there, still in his pajamas, looked at him with weird expression.

“Where are you going Jun?”

Jun squeezed his hands, but there’s no other way out than telling the truth to Ohno, “Ohno-san, I think I don’t suit your place, it’s better for me to work at the poultry.” Jun looked down to his feet, didn’t dare to see Ohno’s reaction, “I can’t work for you anymore, I am sorry.” Jun added, he bowed and stepped out.

“Wait!”

Ohno took his wrist, gripped it strongly, enough to pause his steps. “If you can’t work for me, would you be by my side?” Ohno’s face still looked sleepy when he speaks, but he sounded serious and meant it.

If only they were in a better situation than now, perhaps Jun would turn around and hold Ohno as tight as he can, said that he will always be at Ohno’s side. But if he did that, his plan to return to his village would become so much harder, so he tried not to look at Ohno.

“Otsukare sama Ohno-san.” Jun released his hand from Ohno and run outside. He made sure that Ohno didn’t follow him. He jumped to the bus 15 minutes later, and plopped his head to the chair. He would grabbed his things at the poultry and went away from there, maybe he still have time to say proper good bye to Aiba.

He reached the poultry in about two hours, ignored his stomach which begged for food since he didn’t eat anything from the night before. He walked out of the bus but didn’t expect that Ohno would follow him, still with his pajamas. Nino who drove the car for him looked totally sleepy and hopeless, they stopped right in front of the bus stop, Ohno ran to him when Jun stepped as fast as he could to the poultry.

“Jun, you can stop work for me at the castle, but please continue working here.” Ohno run  to him, waiting for him to nod but Jun just freeze there. Half of his heart wants to nod enthusiastically but the other half want to go away from Ohno as far as he could.

The sun started to shine, Jun can see Ohno clearer now, the light dropped on Ohno’s head, showed the red dyed hair, he looked even cuter in his pajamas. The man’s eyes never leave Jun’s, waiting for him to say yes.

Jun distracted his eyes to the far east where the sun shine brighter. Ohno expected him to say yes, if he denied, this rich man would do anything to make him back. Beside, Sho will never appear here, into this dirty and noisy poultry, so without glancing at Ohno he answered “I guess I can do that.” Jun shrugged, but the effect on Ohno’s childish face was really great. His lips curved in wide smile and he bowed to Jun, make Jun bites his lip to prevent him from laughing, he could see Nino and Aiba at the far corner looked at them with amusing expression on their faces.

***

“Jun, how to take them?”

Jun sighed, he didn’t finish his job in feeding the chickens at the other side when Ohno’s voice heard, calling for him.

“As expected, you can’t do this Ohno-san,” he helped Ohno to take care of the eggs while pouting in annoyed way to his boss.

“I decided to do this.” Ohno smiled to him, which makes Jun lose his anger already.

Ohno decided to help him at the poultry, something that he didn’t need to do, he only want to make a step closer to Jun. Jun didn’t know what happened in the castle, but he heard from Nino that Sho was very disappointed when Ohno decided to live at the village with the poultry and his horses as the excuse. Jun encourages Nino to not give up for his feeling towards Sho, but he got an answer that quite surprised him.

“Aiba confessed to me and I think village is better than castle nee.” Nino winked at him, made Jun grinned.

Ohno didn’t confess that clear to him, but he knew that Ohno likes him, there is no better reason for a rich prince like him to help him at this dirty poultry. With the smile on his lips, he finished helping Ohno.

“Here it is, Obbochan.”

“I am not an Obbochan.” the other answered and they put the eggs together to the bigger place before collecting remain of the eggs.

He found that he became so much happier afterwards. Although still couldn’t believe that Ohno chose to live here and do the same work. The obbochan always refuse whenever Nino brought him the luxury thing from the castle. All of them ended in Nino’s hand, since Ohno said he doesn’t need it.

Once, Jun accidentally saw Aiba kissed Nino behind the stable when he pushed the cart which contains the plastic plate from the poultry. He wished he and Ohno made a great progress like his friends, but Ohno seemed too shy to make a start.

Jun smiled and continued his steps to the river. He squatted and began to wash the plate, he never expected two hands covered his eyes all of sudden from behind.

“Guess who.”

“You’re the failed cowboy who fell down from the horse.” Jun chuckled. Ohno didn’t loosen his fingers on Jun’s eyes, made him paused his work from washing the plate.

“But I never fail to catch your heart.” Ohno whispered in his ears.

Jun never imagined this man could say those romantic words, so he turned his head around.

This was the perfect time to feel Ohno’s lips, he leaned closer and finally kiss the shorter, forgot that his hands were wet and still holding a sponge. As he finished, Ohno chuckled and pushed him to the water, didn’t listen to his protest, just like the first time they saw each other, in the middle of the river, with wet clothes, they continued to kiss each other’s lips for as long as they want…..

THE END
