Jun brought the plate one by one to the table, cleaned the dishes, hanged his apron back to its place, and then took a sit at one of the chairs after finished it. Yuri would wake up in a few minutes, so he took the chance to read the receipt book he got from one of his neighbor yesterday. He lifted his head from it to memorize the contents when his eyes caught a frame above the cupboard across the room, his photo with Ohno, his beloved husband. The frame is always there, decorated their living room, but Jun never realize how bright his smile was that day, when they decided to marry and took that picture with Ohno’s simple camera.
He was skinnier back then, his high cheeks bone can be seen, not like now, still skinny but with chubbier cheek and curved in several places. But Ohno stays the same all time, he is shorter than Jun, his short hair only reached his neck, his photogenic figure looked fresh and so young. Jun inhaled deep breath, he never regret that he chose Ohno as his husband, he is kind, strong, full of responsible and love, ready to protect him and their daughter, never showed Jun lack of love and he always look handsome and cute in Jun’s eyes. The only thing Ohno couldn’t do was to win the heart of Jun’s family.
Jun was born in a middle-high family, his parents are lecturers at the university, not the best school in their city but it’s enough to category them that they are not at the lowest social status among the citizens. His brother, Nino chose a path of carrier to become a lawyer and his mother had been reminding him all the time that he should be like Nino.
However, Jun could never be like Nino. He suffered from asthma since he was a child. He has a medium brain capability that only enough to save the memories of simple subject. But the real disappointment hit his mother and brother after Jun decided to marry Ohno. He still remember Nino’s angry face that day, told him that he was useless from the beginning, only his father who understood and let him go to find his own happiness.
“He’s only a fisherman, a very usual one, how can he feed you?”
Jun still remembered Nino’s words, but he can’t hate Nino, the only one brother he has. Besides, Nino wasn’t that bad, not that he agree for Jun to live with Ohno since the older still on his previous opinion, but when Yuri born he loves the girl as his own niece.
“Daddy, uncle Nino bought me this.” Yuri showed Jun the present that he got from her uncle sometimes. Nino only comes to pick up Yuri from Jun’s apartment but refused to talk with Ohno. He only came and drag her somewhere once in a while because the older lives at the city, four hours from Jun’s place. Jun didn’t want Yuri to know that Nino actually hates her papa, so he tried to make the situation as if everything is alright when Nino visits, with his mocking gaze towards his small apartment. Clearly shown that Nino still disagreeing him to marry Ohno, instead of their happy five years life together.
Ohno avoided every topic about Nino and Jun’s family or only gave short comment every time Yuri showed him the present she got from Nino. Jun knew that Ohno also feel uneasy about it, but he never hated Nino. Jun can tell it, his husband thought that no matter what, he was the one who took Jun from his family. But like what Jun had said a thousand times, that he would never become happier if he marries someone else, no one but Ohno who gave him the most beautiful daughter and happy days for these five years.
Jun moved his gaze from the frame to the clock, Ohno would be home in an hour, and he put the receipt book to the drawer at his kitchen and darted to Yuri’s room. The little girl still curled up under her blanket, her tiny figure looked weak, but she’s strong like her papa, Jun was glad that Yuri doesn’t inherit his asthma. Jun watched her rounded face when her eyes fluttered open.
“Daddy, ohayou.” her voice was a little bit hoarse.
“Ohayou princess.” Jun lowered his head and kissed her temple, the girl circled her arm to Jun’s neck, her skin felt so warm, she kissed Jun’s cheek softly, it made him smile.
“Do you want your breakfast now?” he asked, Yuri nodded weakly.
He lifted her daughter to the kitchen and served her with one of the onigiri and her milk. She yawned sleepily, leaned to the chair.
“Daddy, why Papa must work on Sunday, you said that Sunday is off day for people.” Yuri asked innocently, her tiny fingers reached her glass and gulped the milk. Jun moved closer to her daughter and patted her head, tried to find the proper words to answer.
“Papa loves to work.” he smiled, “He would be home soon, what will Yuri say?”
“Okaeri Papa.” she answered and started to chew her onigiri.
Jun still waited for Ohno, he watched Yuri finished her breakfast and glanced to the clock once in a while. Usually Ohno already home around this hour, was there anything happen in the sea? He thought warily.
“Daddy why do you watch me like that?” Yuri tilted to him and pouted.
“Because Yuri is very cute, just like your Papa.” Jun patted her head again, “Do you like Papa?”
Yuri nodded, “I like Papa and Daddy.” she finished her breakfast and got down from the chair, walked to the toilet. Jun cleaned the table, he brought the dirty glass to the sink when he heard the door opened and Ohno’s voice filled the house.
“Tadaima.”
Jun thundered to the front to welcome his husband, who looked so tired and sleepy.
“Okaeri Satoshi.” Jun helped him when he put off his jacket, took it from Ohno’s hand, while thinking it must be tough for him to stand in the cold. Ohno sneezed, he wiped his head and yawned.
“You are a little bit late, is there anything happened?” Jun brought the jacket to the laundry basket, he returned to Ohno’s side, handed him a towel.
“Nagano kun’s ship was a bit damaged, I and a few other helped him.” Ohno wiped his wet face, a mix between the water and his sweat, “The rain fell when we reached the sea, the weather recently was bit unpredictable” Ohno leaned tiredly to the chair, “wow onigiri.” he cleaned his hands with the wet towel Jun prepared for him and gulped the orange juice first.
“Do you teach today?” Ohno asked him, Jun shook his head, “My student goes to his hometown today.” Jun replied, he also joined Ohno to enjoy the breakfast.
“You better take a long rest today, your flu is getting worst.” Jun commented when Ohno sneezed again.
Ohno nodded, without any other word, he finished his meal.
“Papa!” Yuri ran to him and crush Ohno’s waist with her head.
“Papa still smells bad Yuri.” Ohno chuckled, but he wiped his daughter’s head.
“You said we will go to the park today.” she still clanged to her Papa, without even bothered by Ohno’s sweaty skin.
“Yes Yuri, but you have to let Papa take a rest first, he’s so tired.” Jun said while cleaning the table. Yuri nodded and took Ohno’s hand.
“Come on Papa, take a bath.” she dragged Ohno to the bathroom, Jun could hear their laughing voice when Ohno tickled the girl. He smiled to himself, nothing can be compared to this peaceful Sunday morning, where he and his family are safe inside their small house, where he could hear Yuri and Ohno’s voice all day long.
Sometimes Yuri would play with their nice neighbor, the elderly, Ogura Tomoaki and his kind hearted wife. When Jun must teach part time a little bit longer than usual he would ask them to keep an eye on Yuri which they do with pleasure. But today three of them will have a full day together, there is a little festival at the nearest park and Ohno had promised his daughter that they would go together. While washing the dirty plates in front of him, Jun hummed softly. He dried his hands with the napkin and darted to Yuri’s room, folded her blanket properly and cleaned the bed. When he finished, Ohno already out of the bathroom with Yuri on his back, only cladding in his shorts, his tanned skin clearly shown. Jun approached them, took Yuri from his tired husband.
“I need to buy something for our dinner.” he said while carrying Yuri, “Do you want to eat particular food today?”
“No, anything Jun cook for me is fine.” Ohno dried his hair and wear his T-shirt through his head.
“Daddy, I’ll go with you.” Yuri said from his neck. Jun brought her to the room and helped her change her clothes, today the new skirt he got from Nino last week. A bright yellow with many decoration, something very Nino, he thought.
One thing he likes from Ohno, he never asked him to cook any particular food, and he remembered the earlier days on their wedding, when Jun’s skill in cooking was still terrible. Ohno would always say it was delicious meanwhile Jun couldn’t even taste it. When he was pregnant with Yuri and entered his three end semester, Ohno managed to do all the house works, including cooking the dinner. He felt shy that Ohno can cook better than him, since then Jun worked hard to become a good partner for the man and good Daddy for their daughter.
“Papa, how do I look?” Yuri showed her new skirt to Ohno who sat on the floor, she flopped to Ohno’s lap.
“Yuri looks like a princess.” Ohno kissed her head, and let her leaned towards him until Jun ready to go.
“Come on Yuri, we’ll go to the nearest green grocery for our dinner tonight.” Jun called for her, the kid left her Papa’s lap and ran towards him.
“Papa, sleep tight.” she yelled from the door. Ohno smiled to her and slumped his back to the floor, Jun closed the door after took the umbrella from its place, the sky was still dark, maybe the rain would fall today. He took Yuri’s hand, they walked to the stairs, Jun reminded his daughter to be careful and offered to carry her but Yuri refused immediately.
“Jun kun, Yuri chan.” Ogura greeted them in the front of his apartment, seemed that the old man also wanted to go somewhere.
“Ogura jiichan.” Yuri replied with her high pitch voice.
“Yuri chan looks so cute today.” Ogura patted her head, he then moved his gaze to Jun.
“How is your asthma? I was so scared last week to see you panted like that.” Ogura questioned him warily.
“I am okay Ogura san, there was time when my condition worse than that.” Jun smiled, indicated that he is very health today. Last week he was a bit too exhausted, he tried to help Ohno to sort the fishes he just caught, he went home earlier than Ohno to prepare the dinner, but before he reached his door, he was collapse at the stairs, it was just lucky that Ogura found him there and took the respiratory can from his room immediately.
“Nice to hear that, so where are you heading to?”
“We’re going to buy some vegetables.” Yuri answered, “When will you teach me to play kendama again?” she questioned.
“Anytime Yuri chan wants to.” Ogura smiled to her.
“Yuri can do that tomorrow, okay.” Jun also offered a smile to his daughter who nodded enthusiastically.
“Come on, we have to go now before the rain fall.” Jun eyed the sky, it’s a little bit dark, the cold breeze blew their skin.
“See you Ogura jiichan.”
“See you Yuri chan.”
The old man waved to them, Yuri replied with her free hand and they continued to walk. There are fewer people on the street compared to working days, Jun and Yuri almost reached the green grocery when the rain really fell.
“Daddy, it’s rain.” Yuri said. she hates rain so much because once, Ohno was trapped at the sea in the stormy night. it was a miracle he could back home alive, even though with few scratches on his skin. His friend carried him home and Yuri thought her papa was dead since he was too weak to move. she cried all day long, refused to eat, and didn't want to leave her papa side
Jun carried her to calm her down, protected her head from the falling water. “It’s okay Yuri, we’ll reach the shop soon.” Jun walked faster and thundered in, Yuri hid her face on his neck.
“Papa is home alone.” she said with almost crying voice.
“Papa will be okay, he’s home honey.” Jun took the basket from stack and started to choose the fresh vegetables, with one hand carrying Yuri and the other hand hold the basket.
“Daddy, I want to help.” she finally calmed down and walked on her own feet, ran forward, eyed the group of vegetables above her.
They spent 30 minutes to finish, the rain still drop even though it’s not as hard as before. Jun opened his umbrella and carried Yuri to protect her. The little girl kept silent on their way back home, Jun glanced to her, and she looked frightened.
“Yuri, do you want to help Daddy cook?” Jun asked, tried to distract his little girl from her freight. She nodded a bit, but as they reached their door, she ran in and called for her papa.
“Papa!”
Jun followed her, Ohno must be already fallen asleep by now. “Papa!” she replayed. She started to cry, Jun followed her inside, put the umbrella and the paper bag just carelessly, and he approached Yuri who cried loudly.
“Yuri.” Ohno stepped closer from their bedroom to the crying girl and carried her, “Papa is here.” he patted her head, Yuri still cry silently, hold her papa as if they are apart for a long time. Jun sighed, the uninvited thoughts suddenly crossed his head, what if Ohno disappeared at the sea in another storm, what will he and Yuri does? How can he explain that Ohno was gone.
“Jun.”
Ohno’s voice wake him up from his daydreaming, Yuri was half asleep in his arm.
“Satoshi, you should take a rest.” Jun tried to take Yuri from him but he shook his head.
“Let me cradle her.” he said, holding their daughter tighter to his chest. Jun smiled flipped his back and took the paper bag he threw just now. He saw Ohno disappeared to the bedroom. He took a deep breath. What will Nino said to him if he saw Jun in this kind of condition.
“I told you Jun, he would never make you happy.”
Jun shook his head, he’s happy with Ohno, even though they aren’t living with bunch of money and luxury things. Ohno worked really hard for both of them, to prove that he could feed Jun and Yuri properly. Jun put the vegetables to the refrigerator and darted slowly to the bedroom, Yuri was completely asleep in Ohno’s arm.
“Satoshi.” he called.
Ohno freed his arm from Yuri’s head and approached him.
“Are you okay?” Ohno touched his cheek warily, Jun nodded,
“Otsukaresama.” he held Ohno’s calluses fingers, kissed it lovingly.
“Let me give you massage.” he offered, Ohno responded him with a little nod, they sat on the floor, Jun touched Ohno’s shoulder, gently made him laid on his stomach and Jun started his massage.
“Yuri will be a pretty girl.” Ohno said all of sudden, “And full of love, just like you.”
“Yes she is.” Jun answered.
“I’ll work harder for her and for you.” Ohno said, closed his eyes, enjoying Jun’s touch on his shoulders.
“You already did Satoshi, me and Yuri would never ask for more than you already gave to us, it’s more than enough.”
“Jun.”
“Mmm.”
“I am sorry, I was the one who drag you to my life.”
“Never say it again, I was the one who decided, and I love you.” Jun knows that Ohno still feel guilty towards him, but Jun already heard it enough, he loves to be together with Ohno and that’s it. He would never care what Nino says to him anymore.
“Thank you.” Ohno turned his body and pulled Jun lower so he could kiss him on the lips. They lay down on the floor, with Jun in Ohno's arm until the clock almost reached 1 pm and soon the lunch time is coming. Jun rose up slowly, found Ohno already dozes off. He smiled, pecked the lips gently and managed to prepare their lunch. There’s nothing will happen, he reminded himself, his family will be okay, and that’s what he wants to believe.
