遥か東の空へ (To the Far East Sky)
Chapter 5
The sky decided to pour the rain since morning and make their city, Hamamatsu, turned cold and windy. Jun who already woke up two hours before still blankly stared to the window. The water dropped hardly, send the moist air to his apartment. Finally he distracted his eyes from the sky, looked at the mirror on his hand instead. He checked his swollen face and torn lips, it still looked clear, he couldn’t meet Ohno with this face. But he felt like dying if he didn’t share his pain with someone else, he needs Ohno so desperately now.
He rose from his chair, pulled his drawer opened, and took a masker from it. He would pretend that he got flu so Ohno wouldn’t see his face. Without bothering to eat any food to fill his stomach, Jun tottered towards his door, wobbling unsteady on his wounded leg. He swung the door shut behind him, jogged down slowly to the stairs, opened his umbrella and go through the rain. He couldn’t explain what he feels right now, holding the fact that his daughter had been taken away by his own brother, he imagined how Yuri crying, called her Papa and Daddy who is four hours away from Tokyo.
What Ohno would say to Jun if he tells him about Yuri. He took a deep breath and felt the cold air slipped into his nose. But Ohno is Yuri’s Papa after all, he has a right to know, even though Jun knew that it would break Ohno’s heart as well. He jumped onto the bus, chose the seat in the front, paid attention to the town scene which he saw every day but it looks so strange as if they also blamed him for everything.
Jun had no control on his own thoughts, random fragments of memory spun out of sight again, the happy days he used to have with Ohno. When they decided to marry, the first time he knew that he was pregnant, the day when Yuri born, Ohno’s shady voice when he cradled his daughter. Jun wiped the tears on the corner of his eyes, he will fight to have those days back.
The bus stopped, Jun took his umbrella and walked under the rain once again to reach the jail. His ran of thoughts still ruled his head, it wouldn’t become any better when his feet finally stepped onto the gloomy prison. He waited behind the glass wall, heard the muffled sound of the officer opening the heavy door and Ohno’s face appeared. It’s been a week since Jun saw him, but Ohno’s chubby cheeks couldn’t be seen anymore, he slightly lost his weight each day.
“Jun, are you sick?” Ohno asked quietly, his eyes observed Jun’s hidden face, Jun weakly shook his head.
“I’m sorry it took so long for me to visit,” Jun said from behind his mask, he tried hard to prevent his tears from falling. The memory of Matsuoka almost rapped him floated in his mind.
“Don’t apologize,” Ohno answered lightly, eyeing his own fingers, the silence fall between them. “How’s Yuri?” Ohno finally opened his mouth again. Jun’s words stuck on his throat, he bit his lips and spill the words slowly.
“She was brought to Tokyo.”Ohno lifted his head, his eyes questioned Jun, which made Jun felt a thousand guilty feeling had just stabbed onto his chest like sharp needles. He never once brought Yuri here, and just like the little girl, Ohno must have missed his daughter as much as Yuri missed him. Ohno looked at him for few seconds more before releasing a deep heavy breath.
“Your brother must be so upset,” he spoke with the trembling voice. Jun didn’t dare to see his husband in the eye. He diverted his gaze to the dirty glass wall which separated them.
“Jun, answer me,” Ohno slowly spoke.
Jun nodded because he can’t find a good lie this time, being honest is the best way.
“You come here just to tell me that my daughter was dragged to Tokyo?” Ohno’s cold tone hit his heart like an iceberg.
“Satoshi, I am sorry that I can’t defend Yuri from Nino, my asthma came at the wrong time and I…” Jun felt his heart pounding, hitting his ribs like crazy, should he tell Ohno about what happened yesterday? Or should he keep it as a secret till he die? But what if someone else tells Ohno about it? it will be worse if it happen.
“And what Jun?” asked Ohno.
Jun moved his fingers to the masker which covered his face, he pulled it down, showed the swollen skin and his torn lips.
“What happened?” Ohno stood up instantly, his fingers pushed the wall, to see Jun closer.
“Someone hit me, but I am okay Satoshi, don’t worry,” Jun forced fake smile to his lips, but he was sure, it looks like a pain wincing more than a smile.
“Who did that to you? I’m gonna squeeze his head if I get released from here,” Ohno looked clearly furious, he tightened his fits as if tried to control himself.
“Somebody hurt you and I can’t do anything,” he hissed angrily and desperately. Half of Jun’s heart felt that he shouldn’t tell anything to Ohno.
“They are just a drunken bastard,” Jun lied, “They did it without really knowing it, I came across their place in the wrong time, but I can ran, I’m okay now.”
“Jun, I don’t want to put you in any danger state, I can’t protect you while I am here,” Ohno rubbed his short hair, he was clearly frustrated. “Maybe your brother’s decision to take Yuri with him was right, he wants to protect her, you should go with him too.”
“No, I won’t.” Jun immediately answered, “I can’t live that far from you.”
“Yuri needs you Jun,” there was a hesitated inside Ohno’s voice. But when he continued, he was steady enough. “I’ll be fine, you don’t need to worry about me, you must take care of Yuri for me,” Jun felt his eyes turned warmer when the tears filled it. He quickly wiped it away.
“About the ship that you bought from Aiba san,” he started, “I want a clear explanation.”
Ohno patiently explained everything to Jun. He saved his money for these five years since they got married, worked harder than anyone, until it’s enough to purchase the ship. He planed to keep it as a surprise for Jun on their anniversary, but something unexpected happened, as if it was planned. Ohno wanted to rent that ship and continue his job as the fisherman. That was his plan before it ruined by the fact that he was arrested and if he can’t prove that he’s innocent, perhaps the death penalty awaited for him ahead.
“I can work with that ship,” Jun said.
“No Jun, your health didn’t permit it.”
“But.”
Ohno sighed, “You can’t work that hard, I don’t want to hear you risk your health and hospitalized, where I can’t even be beside you.” he said softly.
Jun can only nodded, didn’t have any energy to argue with his husband, he left the jail with low spirit, but at least he had told Ohno everything, except the reality that he was almost rapped.
He withdrew his phone from his jeans pocket and called Nino, the busy tone answered him. It’s Monday, Nino must be very busy. He inserted the phone back and continued to walk outside. The rain still pour in small drops, the cold wind blew harder than before. Jun shivered while waiting for the bus which will bring him back home.
As he arrived at his door, he slumped down to the tatami, even Ohno told him to do what Nino said, should he back home to Tokyo? It means he would be separated from Ohno, but Yuri is there. He couldn’t choose between his husband and his daughter. Both of them are very important for him, but if he analyzed his condition right now, the choice to return to Tokyo is so much better.
He called Aiba, asked him to keep the ship, for now, Jun didn’t know what to do with it. He rolled down and drowned his face to his palms, cursing the stupid police, cursing anyone who trapped Ohno and make him ended up in that smell prison. Is Yuri alright? Can Nino handle her when she cries? Too much worry that he must think about. Jun rose from the tatami and stepped to his room, maybe it will be better if he went to Tokyo, to beg for Nino’s help or find a job there.

He found himself inside the train next two days, he watched the scene outside which run backwards, still covered his mouth with the masker, tried to erase the memory at the beach. He didn’t want to think that this is the end of his togetherness with Ohno. He must find the way out, and there should be the exit for this case, if only Nino is willing to help, he thought. It has been almost four years since the last time he went home to Tokyo. It was not because Ohno forbid him to, but it was Jun who chose to stay away, besides, he doesn’t have anything to talk with his mother. He already gave up to asure her that he is happy with Ohno, and due to this case, the woman must hate Ohno more than she already was.
As the train reached the last stop, Jun jumped down, staggered a bit and walked while checking Nino’s address on his note. He made a phone call to the elder and this time, he picked it up.
“Jun, are you on your right mind now?”
“I’m in Tokyo, I’m looking for your apartment.”
“Yuri is fine.”
“We need to talk,” Jun cut him before the sentence finished.
“Alright, you can go to my apartment first, the key is under the vase in front of my door, I’ll be home around 5,” Nino cooperated more than Jun thought he would be.
“What about Yuri? Where is she?”
“She’s in mother’s house, don’t worry, I’ll pick her up if you don’t want to show your face, see you this evening,” Nino cut the line.
Jun breathe in relieve, at least Nino didn’t refuse him to meet his daughter. He went to Nino’s address as the elder said, it located in the middle of city. Out of his expectation, Nino planted many roses in front of his door. He found the key and unlocked the door, the room is quite mess. Nino seemed to throw everything as he got home and left them on the floor just like that. He took them one by one and placed them at the laundry basket near the washing machine.
He never been to this apartment, Nino’s old one was a little bit smaller and closer to their house. He put off his jacket and hanged them behind the door, continuing to explore the entire room, wondering if Nino ever felt lonely to live alone here. But knowing the elder’s habit, he must drag some woman sometimes, he thought. Nino never told him about his ideal partner, he’s rather cold compared to Jun.
Jun decided to do a little clean up, since he couldn’t stand the messy room. It took him another half hour when he found something at the back of cupboard, a falling frame. He took it, guessed that Nino was too lazy to take it from the floor. A young woman smiled in that photo, her long hair freely fall up to reached her shoulder, and her sharp eyes looked focus to the camera. She seemed so fierce but attractive. Jun flipped the frame, he saw Nino’s hand writing ‘my dearest Yuriko’ there.
“Yuriko,” he mumbled to himself, perhaps he saw something that he was not supposed to see. Maybe the elder kept a secret from him, Jun thought. But he didn’t have any right to know, so he put down the frame once again to the floor.
He darted to the refrigerator and found a cabbage and a little bit meat there, there still 3 hours for Nino to go home. Maybe it’s better for him to cook to kill the time. For a moment, he forgot about his problems. He would be able to meet Yuri this evening, it’s enough to make his heart turn warm, and if the situation permitted him, he would talk to Nino, ask for his help to get Ohno free.

“Tadaima.”
“Daddy!”
Yuri ran to him, Jun squatted to welcome his daughter into a tight embrace. He kissed the girl’s head, poured all of his longing to her.
“Daddy missed Yuri so much,” he wiped Yuri’s face and smiled to her, prevent his tears from falling.
He can see Nino watches them from the corner of his eyes, but the elder diverted his gaze to his windows and waited until Jun released the little girl.
“So, this time you will obey me?” Nino asked with his usual tone.
“It’s not for you,” Jun replied, “It’s for her,” he pointed silently to his daughter who played with the pillow on Nino’s couch.
Nino nodded, he took a deep breath, “Because I am a good guy and you still my beloved little brother, I’ll let you stay here,” he mumbled while putting off his watch from his right hand.
“Thanks,” Jun answered. The frame he found just now still lingered to his head, but he decided it was better not to ask about it so sudden.
He curled under the blanket with Yuri that night, wondering if this is the best way he could take, being far away from Ohno. He closed his eyes and Ohno’s shadow appeared, so cold in that dull building. Is there any way to help him out from this situation? He pulled Yuri closer to him, wished these days would be over soon.
